Nothing seems to be compromised, everything is in order. I just think a certain anonymous entity with tools of power on this forum is effing with me. I can say no more. I don't wanna wake the dragon.

Possibly. It seems the ladder disappears after you disable the Forts defenses. I went back to an early save before I did and low and behold the ladder was there, but when I disabled the defenses and checked back, it was gone.
