I never barrier. Can't be arsed to mess with that stuff when I have other crap to be throwing out. That's why, when playing a mage, I -always- bring another mage along. Their barriers are set to preferred. That whole tree is just so BORING, so I let the other losers deal with that stuff while I throw the elements. Then a rogue because you never know when you'll need something unlocked, and that means Sera because I find Varric so horrible ... what was I saying? Oh, yeah, Varric. So horribly forgettable. *ducks and runs*

Pro tip: You don't always need a rogue to open a locked door. They can be smashed. Stonefist and Might Blow work great. There are other abilities that can do this. The only doors that can't be smashed are ones that can only be unlocked with deft hands perk.
