You need to know the ending before you write the beginning. Rule number 1 in writing a story. If you don't know how it's going to end, how the f*ck are you supposed to work up to it? This is why you get endings in literature, in movies, in games where they do a 180 and give you an ending that makes absolutely no f*cking sense, it comes out of nowhere and makes everything before hand completely pointless.

I don't think you need to have the ending fully figured out before you write the beginning but its a good idea to figure it ut pretty early on.
