I don't think there's any reason actually given for the colour-coding beyond a suggedtion of power and/or intellect level. As far as I recall, the red ones talk and the green ones don't. I think.

Guys you know what...Justinia is actually a time lord.  And she was trapped in the fade about to regenerate but was able to hold it off till the Inquisitor came along and this is her finally giving in.

So it looks like greens just attack, and I'm sure there are some orange-y ones that just attack too. Red ones talk but are quite limited, due to either confusion or 'injury'. Gold ones are really talkative and more complex.

Or that's how it seems at least. Not sure what it means either. Based on more powerful emotions or concepts, maybe?

Don't forget that the greenies can become the element of a rage demon or despair demon if they came out of the rift with them, that's where some orangey-fire ones and blue-cold ones come from.

Edit:  And it's really late for me here so goodnight DQ, my theory is that spirits come in all the colours of a bag of skittles and we have yet to taste the rainbow.
