How was the fight against the minigun toting super mutant before getting him?

He tore me apart with that minigun. Twice. I ended up having to hide in one of the rooms and just pick at him with what little ammo I had. I had a lot of shotgun ammo available, but couldn't get close enough for it to do any damage, so I was literally just crouched in a room, picking at his health with a standard pipe pistol.
