Oh it has the nasty habbit of trying to grab me around my leg and then attack my ankle with its mouth wide open.  So I was shaking my finger at it telling him NO! NO and every time I did he would just excitedly twitch and prance on the carpet and dig in, then I whacked him on the nose, repeatedly, to get him to stop...he didn't.

Indeed.  My intention is not to hurt the Dog just to get its attention.  And clearly I am doing neither considering the dog just continues on with its same behavior no matter what I do to it.  So its not hurt not getting angry just like 'play with me Al play with me'.
