I was about to jump on the "yes we should learn other languages!" train until the French-bashing commenced >_>

<_<

(German would be easier for the English speakers to learn. Russian, with the alphabet, would be a lot harder but I agree it has a pretty great sound. And what with world events as they are, it would also be pretty practical)

I have no idea whether our tastes overlap, so I don't know that I'm fit to make a recommendation for you specifically. But Bioshock is my all-time favorite video game, after 21+ years of video games. Bioshock 2 was good in a not-as-good-as-the-first-game kind of way. Bioshock Infinite was polarizing and while I enjoyed it I also recognize the criticism.

I think my only concern is that you can't create your character from scratch, from what I've heard. There's no CC like in ME or DA is there?

But you can make choices, right?

Oh.  I had no idea who that was or anything.  The clip just looked old, but I guess that was intentional.

Hey, how old it is not that important, imo, it's a good cover  :D

I prefer male voices in general (regret nothing ;) ), so I like more this version.

It is a very linear game -- no role-playing by any stretch of the imagination. The games are more about learning who your character is (and learning what is going on in the world you've entered) than anything else. Most of the fun, gameplay-wise, stems from interesting use of plasmids with enemies and the environment. I love many things about the game (the time-period/aesthetic, the dark comedic themes, the horror aspects) but I especially love the audio diaries you can find which flesh out the world very well and also tell tiny stories about the inhabitants.

As for choices, I'd say less choice than in the kind of games you're used to, but some. There's kind of a paragon vs renegade angle to some of the moral decision-making, but it's not a huge part of the first game, only a slightly bigger part of the second (which has more choices, but nothing really huge), and not memorably in the third (but that's fine, because Infinite is more about predestination than choice).

Yeah, what akbogert said. Also you can't create the protagonists (they are a different person in each game).

I almost don't play games where the protagonist is a guy but these are an exception, so worth it.

You know, I'm interested enough that I don't think it will be a huge issue...

No giant spiders, right?

Haha. No, for the most part the terrors in these games are human. Ish.

Brilliant, then hopefully I'll love it as much as y'all do.

Really hoping it's controller compatible too.

I don't mind playing as a guy, I generally have a few playthroughs with guy protagonists, but I'll miss creating their faces.

With all the DLCs for all the games, it came to right at about $25.  Bioshock 1 now installed, 2 downloading now.  So that'll be three more games added to my steam library that I may end up never playing.

But in the meantime...

Re: gender of protagonists: I've never really thought about it. I don't think my interest in a game has a relationship to whether the protagonist is a guy or girl. However when given the choice, I almost never opt for the guy character. I don't know whether that's for "expanding boundaries" reasons or "would rather stare at a female" reasons. I'd like to believe it's at least between those.

In fact, my reticence to play as a guy is the only reason I've yet to experience the Dorian romance.

Noooooo! Play them!

As far as DLC goes, here's my general opinion:

For Bioshock 2, the Minerva's Den DLC is nearly better than the whole actual game. Well worth playing.

For Infinite, as Dienne said, Burial at Sea is great. Especially if you like noir. And especially if you end up enjoying Rapture.

I'm the same. I don't give it any thought, I just play the game.

My only thought goes into what kind of character I want to play, and if that personality works better in my head as a male or a female. I'm happy to play as either gender.

Ended up buying it. If it's terrifying or I hate it, it was only $10.

Good choice, Dazzle. *Verse Approves*

I have all 3 Bioshock games for Xbox 360 and I love them.

They're really fun. I would be playing them myself if I wasn't so into Fallout 4.

I recently updated my Xbox One for backwards compatibility and I still haven't played any of my Xbox 360 faves because of Fallout 4. *shakes fist at Bethesda*

If you like shoot-y games, it's good. If you like having a sidekick who feels like their own person and actually helps and never hinders, it's great.  If you like an intriguing and complicated plot, it's superb. If you like a game that will twist your mind in knots and leave you gaping in surprise, it's fantastic.

It's also the only game to make a song by the Beach Boys (as sung by a barbershop quartet) the creepiest song ever.
