But the inhumans will never replace it. There's something deeply..err.. inspiring and down to earth about it. Stan Lee partly based it on MLK and Malcolm X. That part of the message of the peaceful vs militant resonates.. it's an old tale. The Inhumans have none of it. It resides completely in the escapist framework of comic booky stuff. It's interesting on that level, but mostly for just fans who only care about that. The X-Men appeal to a lot of people, even if they don't know at it at first. Same goes for Spidey.. everyone loves the geeky teen element. Not just Spider-Man.
I'm not saying they should replace the mutants. I'm just saying that Marvel seems to be replacing the mutants with them anyway. The same "secret inner difference, waiting to manifest" that was once rooted in human evolution with x-men is rooted in alien genes with inhumans. The thinly-veiled parallels to real-world racism and bigotry once reserved for people finding out someone is mutant are now for people finding out someone is an inhuman. As for the MLK/MX parallel, you're right that the inhumans don't have it (though it could very easily emerge -- multiple groups of inhumans with different beliefs about integration vs. separation from humans). But then that message was clouded over the decades anyway. Heck, Magneto was practically more sympathetic than Cyclops in Bendis' Uncanny (I should also note that defaulting the Malcolm X representative to the role of villain has its own questionable implications).
As for appeal, I think the fact that Marvel can slap Kamala Khan's face on the front of the inhuman push will help them a lot. She is already widely considered the modern Peter Parker. People don't know Inhumans so they don't necessarily care about them as much. But if Marvel is intentional about it, they can absolutely turn the Inhumans into the property that connects with people the way the X-Men used to. Their television shows are laying the roots for that already.
