Wait... here's something else I want to put forth. I can't help but see stories like DAI in insidious, corporate driven terms.
The job of a company to a consumer is, bottom line, make them feel empty. And that they have the product to fill that void. Stories like this don't feel like stories to me as much as they do a simple product. They fill the void of being an average person not being heeded in the world, not having a big say in politics/religion/etc.. Companies don't even have to make you feel this void, because for many, it's already there. So the product end is just about fulfilling the desire rather than creating the need. How wonderful is it to be a random hero from anywhere, where you dictate everything, down to people's very beliefs, and are listened to no matter what.
And I think a lot of games do this. Not just this game. I'm not necessarily singling it out. Sometimes I see these big gaming expos and notice the marketers talking in these terms when they have their presentation speeches... Sometimes it's fun, but I just think DAI took it to a blatant extreme. And played with the subject of faith, which makes me more annoyed. And players embrace it themselves, so I can't say it isn't what they want. I'd be wrong. And they reject things that swing the opposite way sometimes. Like DA2.
My opinion of DAI has changed so many times it isn't funny.
When it was first released I loved it. My first run was great and the only issue I had with it was how anti climatic the ending was. Imo, for a game to be truly amazing it has to have an end battle that sends chills down your spine.
The first and second ME is a good example of what I'm talking about. Especially ME1, when you go to Ilos and talk to that prothean AI, discover the big revelation about the Citadel then go forth to beat Saren and stop the reapers.
DAO also had a brilliant ending.
On my second run I started to notice things like my choices and dialogue options not really making a difference. Then I started to notice other minor details.
And yeah, the open world aspect sucks. It has improved since BW gave us more satisfying loot drops because the crafting is great.
I went off Inquisition for a long time. I was burnt out.. Then the Trespasser DLC came out and I loved it all over again. Choices made a difference (I.e if the rescued or sacrificed the chargers, put Cullen back on lyrium, etc)
What DAI suffers from most, imo (and at a guess) was last minute decision making. For instance implementing the different races.
Despite having that choice it's pretty obvious the game was tailored for a human only Inquisitor. Dalish elves for instance, shouldn't sound like posh Brits. Tal Vashoth, even though they reject the Qunari doctrine, shouldn't be humans with horns. That much was shown in DA2.
