Christmas is on the 25th. Tomorrow is the 24th. Christmas Eve.

The historically most likely person "Jesus" Christ was born on March 25th. December was chosen to out-celebrate and christianize (both of which are actual words, super-mega-words even, so don't bother looking them up) the Roman Sol Invictus.

My point being, it is historically encouraged to celebrate the lad whenever you feel like it.

Nope. Christmas is on the 24th.

   Is this an Old World <>  New World language confusion thing?

Yeah, I'm confused. I'll just drink some more cider.

Maaaaybe?

Not in this part of the Old World... 24=Christmas Eve and 25=Christmas.

Strange... Spain does the same thing? How about UK?

Yeah, I'm confused. I'll just drink some more cider.

Actually, we celebrate on the 24th. We have dinner (traditionally, fried carp and potato salad - as opposed to a turkey in the US) and then we go to the Christmas tree, under which the presents are.

None of this stockings hung up thing around here. Though perhaps it's best said that the US still originate from an English colony, and the English have been strongly influenced by germanic tribes (Angles, Saxons, Jutes in the 5th century, AD) and later the Norman French (William the Conqueror, King in 1066-1087) who are of latin origin, whereas the Moravian areas are predominantly Slavic from the 5th century, meaning there is a large difference in cultures. Perhaps it could be a surprise we even all celebrate Christmas, but that is likely because of the later Christian influence on the entirety of Europe (the Hussite movement was actually very similar to what John Wycliffe demanded in the UK in the 14th century, so as we can see, the differences in Christianity would be smaller than the influence of Slavic and Germanic tribes).

If you are on the other side of the international date line, then tomorrow would in fact be the 25th (Christmas Day).

I can't wait for it to be over with. Just one more night of holiday work stress. And it's the worst night. Need more cider.

That just means the game will be that little bit better. Delays aren't always bad things.

Evidence suggests "the meal" and "present opening" events traditionally occur on the 24th in Czech households, rather than on the 25th as in many other European countries and their "festivity inheritors" in the New World.  This day is Štědrý den, literally "Generous Day" according to my weak internet sources.

Every day a school day.

I know that. I'm just annoyed that it's being delayed again. After being delayed. After being delayed. So many delays get frustrating.

My family spreads Christmas over the 2 days. We have our big dinner on the 24th and open all of our presents to one another.

Then over the course of the night we secretly fill one another's stockings (there's a room with all the stockings, honour code that only one person goes in at a time) and then we open our "santa" presents in the morning and watch the Disney Parade, and eat cinnamon buns!

I'm not very familiar with US traditions in this regard, to be honest.

Celebrating on the 24th... I don't know. If I grew up celebrating on the 25th, I wouldn't even stop to guess.

So, they did NOT release it yet. Anyway, when is Morrigan going to reach Shembala?

...you... just nailed it, really.

That's the tradition. And as I said, fried carp and potato salad (yummy, I just had some because reasons) are the traditional foods, though many seem to disregard that particular tradition.

In Lebanon it's Christmas Eve on 24th and Christmas Day on 25th.

I'm flying home in a few hours. This will be the first Christmas in 8 years where my entire family is going to be together.

I'm so excited :D

Traditions in the US differ with each family and where that family is from. A bunch of the traditions I follow come from my Danish grandmother so I grew up with Christmas Eve being the bigger holiday.

As far as shembala, I have no idea.

Awesome!! B) That is quite a feat. I don't even remember the last time my entire family was able to gather together for Christmas. It's been at least 12 years.

Wait...isn't Christmas Eve generally the bigger holiday with Christmas Day being reserved for visiting relatives?

It really depends on the family. American traditions are so diverse when it comes to Christmas because of all the immigrants that settled here over the centuries. Most stores are closed on the 25th and not the 24th.

****! That's actually pretty damn cool.

I... don't think I'll ever see the entire family at one Christmas table ever again.

Allow me to shrug. That's life.

Being what basically amounts to a country of immigrants, it's not very surprising.

I don't really know Danish traditions very well, either, but I'll assume there would be more than two paralels running there.

As much as Bohemia and Moravia are historically Slavic lands, we HAVE spent a massive amount of time under the rule of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and even before that, German influence has always been a massive issue in the past, at one point the language being at risk, with German taking over almost everywhere.
