Why spare him? his head looks so good on a pike...
<Chopped his head off in 5/5 playthroughs
I don't necessarily spare him, but the game is deceptive and subtle in how it makes you feel so justified and smug against him, when in truth, he represented a good step away from nobility and into meritocracy. This is a guy who put a female farm girl in charge of his armies. This is why he's a hero to them, no matter how much he's villainized by Alistair or protags.
In the real world, chopping the head off a king is a good thing ![]()
The same could probably be said of Oliver Cromwell. Same kind of devisive figure..

His daughter is a commoner though. There's nothing noble about her. And nothing that ensures her line permanently.. like establishing a bloodline or anything like that. That's the major difference with nobles. They believe in superior or "divine" genes. Rather than abilities and merit. That's why Eamon is so insistent about Alistair. He mythologizes his bloodline.

I had actually forgotten about that. But still he gave her the throne, or would have, that is still a monarchy. Only with different nobles in charge.

Edric Cousland didn't like Alistair. Edric was noble and smug about it all, and under his eyes Alistair was irresponsible and childish. But he joined Alistair with Loghain's daughter for his blood and in hopes she would teach Alistair to be more "kingly"
Meanwhile Edric went running to Morrigan's arms ![]()

Mal found the two of them to be perfect counter points for one another. That Anora's aggressive pragmatism and knowledge of the game of thrones could temper Alli's more blind idealistic ignorance, and vice versa.
