This being a forum is no exception to the use of the right and wrong word. If you say one word that has a negative meaning, there is a good chance someone will find it offense or hurtful or otherwise will not be cool with it, regardless of your intention.

Obviously.

It's holding them off. Not beating, unless your intention was to be aggressive; and in the case of "beating off women", you should understand that that itself would be taken the wrong way.

Honey, just to interject, the phrase does exist. It comes up a fair bit in 90s american movies.

I am merely trying to assist you, Al. You want to be a writer. You need to learn and understand these things. (And make this a lesson to learn by: Just because you aren't currently "writing", does not mean you should stop thinking about it)

I'll accept that. That's my bad. I did not know that that string of words was in fact used a lot. But my point remains the same.

*sigh* I guess.  BUT as a writing excercise though this phrase should not be, by itself, out of bounds because it is something people do say.  And a character can mean it in any number of ways and an audience can react to it in any number of ways.  I mean if writing could not touch controversial issues or expressions or things then Game of Thrones/ASOIF wouldn't be a thing.

Totally silly comments re the 'beating off women' line.  It has zero connection or connotation with how it is being looked at by some here.  It's been used for years both in relation to men and women.

And things, I could've easily said 'beat off a bunch of hobbits with a stick'. Or traveling rocks.

That is why you have to understand the words you are using. If you want people, readers, to understand a specific thing, then you have to use the right words. Not just any word that can mean the same thing. If you just use any word without thinking about it, you are opening the flood gates on yourself. You are asking for people to take it the wrong way.

Light I think you're going out of your way to make this an issue.

Maybe. So I'll leave it here. But, I am just trying to help him as a writer. It's stuff every good writer knows.

Maybe 'some here' are from non-English-speaking countries and/or have never heard that expression.

I mean, the only reason I heard of it is because I try to understand the US/British culture a bit more... and played GTA, where you can assume it's dirty about pretty much 50% of the **** characters say.

No more of a problem than if a non english speaker used an expression used historically for years in their country.
