No you weren't. Every character practically had two origins.. the beginning and then Ostagar. And you were a mere soldier who survived that. Not some chosen one. And you got nowhere except for Flemeth. Even down to her telling how the battle plan was laid out.

The story arc for the Warden essentially went 'ok, you look like you can do something tough, here, now you are a Grey Warden.' Which granted is kinda their schtick but it makes for a ****** poor character arc and essentially meant you were chosen regardless of the skills you had or did not have.

Now consider DA I.  The Inquisitor had to prove themselves, twice, in the first like 3 campaign missions of the main game.  THey were initially going to be executed by Cassandra and the Chantry who believed you guilty of destroying the Conclave until you proved them wrong.  And then through your trials throughout the course of the main game they eventually decided to make you Inquisitor.  Proving yourself by bringint the Templars/ Mages into the fold and then proving yourself again by personally standing up to Corypheus.  besides, especially in the early part of the game, the 'Chosen One' narrative was more the Inquisition playig it up for political purposes.  The player character had a choice on whether or not they believed it, which even informed how the Inquisition treated you.

Seriously man...

I probably wouldn't have said anything except you said it was the greatest game ever. Everyone's entitled to their opinions, but damn.

Um. What?

You're a prisoner for five seconds and then suddenly you're the "Herald of Andraste". While you don't get the official title of Inquisitor until Skyhold, all decisions are left up to you until that point. It's just "unofficial" beforehand.

Additionally, there is never any struggle. Corypheus can easily kill you in in your fart shall burn, but instead spends that time preaching "evil villain" bullshit to you.

Solas tells you about Skyhold, but you get the credit for the fine and just like that, you have an awesome base or operations.

While the same is true for Origins.. You start off, get put into a bad situation then have no choice but to join the GWs, after that traitorous wretch Logain does his thing it's just you and Alistair, but for some reason the senior warden leaves everything up to you which makes no sense at all. Even Morrigan points it out and has a laugh.. So yeah, they're about on par when it comes to "being special" and having everything "handed to them on a silver platter" except I find Origins tries to be a bit more convincing about "struggle" throughout the plot.

It isn't just the warden tho, a lot of their specialness comes from the prestige of the Gray Warden title itself. Much of the time, when they greet the dwarves or the elves, they're pointing to the treaties and the ancient validity of the order. Not the warden specifically.

"You look like you can do something tough".

The City Elf single handedly slaughtered an entire garrison (and I suppose sparked a riot in the process).

Hell the character arc for the Warden essentially stopped before the game even got a chance to get going. In Ostagar.  The Inquisitor's character arc continues to at least Here Lies the Abyss.  The Warden, to me, is a very bad Protagonist.  But then again most Protags in RPGs (and even gaming) are.  Hawke, and to an extent the Inquisitor, are bucking that trend.

What character arc? There's nothing personal about it.

I'll agree on Hawke. They are better than both. The whole game is an origin story.

My comment was against the idea that the Warden was a chosen one, not for it.

The Warden felt less like a chosen one to me because they fell into a unique order and they weren't the only ones in it. Alistair was also a warden. And Alistair was the one who, with tired broken eyes, looked out at that marsh under the golden light of a dying sun at Flemeth's hut, and went, "It's just us, isn't it?"

Cassandra treats the Inquisitor like a precious egg to be coddled and protected. Yes they need to be protected because the anchor is rare, but the very fact they have to be protected because they're the only one who can stop the rifts already lent itself to the chosen one trope.

The anchor wasn't a centuries' old chalice ritual anyone could partake in.

Through and through, the warden and their team just walked around with treaties. It was all about the treaties.

The warden never got a castle. He stayed in that dam camp the entire game.

And the warden certainly did NOT have an uber selection of drapes and bed covers at a Val Royeaux shop to personally decorate his royal quarters my god

And it's Flemeth who set it all up. You gotta live up to her urging, but it has nothing to do with being chosen, right...

A crackin good one too.

The Inquisitor goes from chains to becoming INquisitor, and it does not happen over night.  The Inquisitor grows in power through the Mark.  And the Inquisitor grows through uncovering their past.  Sure, its not a very grandios character arc, not even really fit to shine Hawke's shoes but its better then every other RPG protag I've played including the Warden, and Shepard.

Anyways, Al...

 I'm sorry, but you make it seem like the Inquisitor had some deep dark past that no one knew about when it was only a few hours at the least that they had forgotten.

I thought it was great myself. I do wonder how much of that is due to my headficcanon, though; not that much, overall, I think, since none of it changed the details of the game itself.

A lot of the time, for me, the game's alleged flaws are just part of the "game" of the game. Like DA2 - the complaints over the limited setting are like complaining elves aren't taller, or something. That's just the way it is.

Well, I had to spend way too long to even find a good headcanon. It's not intuitive for me (the human mundane). Funnily, it was with Al's help that I honed in something.

At launch, I played a human mage.. much easier backstory to work with. But boring gameplay.
