I got the Roku and got the HBO Now service. HBO Now is kinda... odd... about how you are able to subscribe.
Wait, that came on XOne... that's how I got to see the first episode for free. But when I tried to subscribe, it wanted an actual cable provider.
....
Just tried again.. looks like it still does.

Yeah, unfortunately XBox Live doesn't cut it. You have to have the Roku, I think Amazon something maybe, or a couple of select cable providers. It's like HBO doesn't want the headache of actually managing the payments for the service, so they foist it on some other provider.
I think, hopefully, it'll be easier to get if it becomes a more popular thing.

I'm just guessing, but I think it's also so patchwork because they don't want to scare the cable companies as they being to flee from them. Cable as a TV provider is going the way of the dodo bird. As it should. I like me my on-demand-TV.
