edit: *disclaimer, I have nothing against people enjoying playing it, or that it exists etc.. only an issue with a couple of the places it's placed as gyms in it's servers (namely just cemeteries and memorials for people who have died).

I agree. There are many PokeStops that don't make sense. I think the selection is random. 

 

The game is actually pretty bad at tracking the correct distance. And I also hatched 2 2km eggs while sitting at home and only having the app open, lol. I wonder if they fix some things anytime soon.

If I recall correctly I think pokestops are based on another game Ingress) portals. The computer randomly chose sites that fit a certain criteria for foot traffic, but the programmers didn't think to tell the computer to filter out more tragic spots.

Portals and Pokestops can be reported, I believe, it just takes time to get them removed...

I think it has to do with recalculating triangulation. You'll notice your avatar occasionally run to a random spot and then back, and I bet it gets counted for the eggs.

So it's an augmented reality app, where the in app map layers over our own. You walk down the street and in real time your app character walks down the same street.

If you see a pokemon on the app and tap on it, your outward camera will turn on to show the pokemon in front of you, say on a lawn or driveway.

There are also stops that you can pick up free items from, and those are often places that have a lot of regular foot traffic, parks, churches, area art, etc. occasionally they turn out to be very tragic places to visit; I often ignore those.

I'm confused how you get by without a phone. This thing is my mini-computer, I barely even use it as a phone, and it almost never leaves my hand.

You're right, from where I've read that is the database used for the stops. They only recently (this past few days) added a way to report poke-stops that are in unacceptable areas, dangerous areas, or innapropriate areas. Glad they added it, but there should have been there from the start. Read that only just now here . Wanted to go looking myself first before replying xD

 

I think half the problem is they didn't check the database first for possible inappropriate places themselves, just ported it from Ingress stuff with no human look over (so it feels). They also didn't have area reporting, or creating request, from release but do now, late better then never, and finally they grossly underestimated the popularity of pokemon (honestly, no-one can argue that fact, they've been overloaded since they released the app).

Having a human look over it would take years. You'd have to go through every location in every country to make sure that each individual location was acceptable, and even then it would be based solely on that persons thoughts on said location.

It's much easier to just get people report in that an area is unsuitable. That way, they can easily pinpoint it.

I just don't talk to many people anymore. Or need to (for work, etc..). I had a flip phone about 10 years ago, but I wasn't very social then either. 

 

I do like computers though.. but prefer PCs.

Different lifestyles is all. I don't understand people who can't put their phone down and take it everywhere with them and insist on internet on it, text messaging, apps etc, all of that is still extremely strange to me.

I think it depends on the mod handling the reports and what house Jupiter is in conjuction with the third phase of the moon. You should also stand on one foot in a barrel of whiskey with a frog tied to your throat and left arm extended in front of you holding a nug. I know Donk has at least 18 or 19.

lol, I guess I'm terribly silly thinking the way the word database is used, there'd be queries that can have the database do that for them. My mistake. Of course that depends on if the areas used are solely an address in the database and zero other info which is most likely. My point was they didn't have a report option until the complaints about disrespectful areas hit public knowledge and online news articles, then they put up a way to report it.

haha, I have nothing against people who can't live without their phone unless they're endangering others, themselves and texting while walking down the sidewalk, going through shops, or using it a lot when hanging with friends/family (that last part phone should be off, that's rude imo). If none of that is happening, have at it I can't complain about anything except those lol.

No, she isn't like that. It's just funny because she never used computers and she's 60 years old. Now she's on chat apps with overseas family and wants to download games.
