Yeah, it's not in the source material, but it was a good and interesting way to connect it into the MCU. The next stone should appear in either the Inhumans or the Doctor Strange movie. By the way, Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing Doctor Strange so another hazzah for that!

I like the Eagles appearing in The Hobbit, even if it is a bit like cheating, but it's been a year or two since I (re)read the book, so I'm not remembering the exact extent of their role as Tolkien intended. I just remember that they appear, and it's significant because they don't usually bother with the affairs of... y'know... non-flying people... things... creatures.

 

My spoiler has to do with The Hobbit, so if anybody cares to see that bit of discussion without spoiling Ultron...feel free...with caution. Once a mind has been pre-blown, it cannot be re-blown.

When Frodo and Same destroy the Ring, and there talking and then they kinda pass out, then the Eagles come in just to "save the day" essentially. It's really lackluster. Then it happened again in the Hobbit. This army is coming in, the good guys are spent, they're going to die and then NOPE, send in the Eagles just to wipe out that army and take them of the playing field. It's boring and underwhelming and leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

 

I now use that same thing for whenever something like that happens in movies. Which is what I got with the Helicarrier. "We haven't got a plan, we're talking about ending" and then suddenly, you get this new thing that comes in, mops up and gives the heroes a lifeline. It's really, really boring.

Tolkien admitted back around Return of the King that he really had no other way to save Sam and Frodo after Gollum chompy-chomped his finger, so he had Eru (or in this case, himself) intervene. Both to show Eru still helping out mankind, and also, as he admitted, because he had no other logical idea of getting them out. Even back then though a lot of fans criticized it as a blatant deus ex machina, which even I kinda still think it is.

 

I don't recall the Eagles playing a huge role in the Battle of the Five Armies though. They were there but they weren't the sole army-crushing force involved. Speaking of the novels though, of course. Jackson doesn't really respect authenticity all that much, though he's got a penchant for action.

 

Still, he makes the Eagles seem waaaaaay more important in The Hobbit than Tolkien ever made them.
