Now that is a smashing idea!  What this place needs is some flowers, fer shure, fer shure, and St. John's Wart seems as good as any.

You know I worry about your soda consumption. I don't want to have to fly out to the UK again because you've landed yourself in the hospital with a heartattack before you turn 30.

Tolkien admitted back around Return of the King that he really had no other way to save Sam and Frodo after Gollum chompy-chomped his finger, so he had Eru (or in this case, himself) intervene. Both to show Eru still helping out mankind, and also, as he admitted, because he had no other logical idea of getting them out. Even back then though a lot of fans criticized it as a blatant deus ex machina, which even I kinda still think it is.

 

I don't recall the Eagles playing a huge role in the Battle of the Five Armies though. They were there but they weren't the sole army-crushing force involved. Speaking of the novels though, of course. Jackson doesn't really respect authenticity all that much, though he's got a penchant for action.

 

Still, he makes the Eagles seem waaaaaay more important in The Hobbit than Tolkien ever made them.

 

Interesting, as much as I love LOtR I admit to not knowing much about Tolkien.  Also I was very young when I attempted the Silmarilion and honestly it was far too much for me then.  I have dug out my old copy and will be re-reading it.  I remember reading that Tolkien 'made it up as he went along'.  In any case although there wasn't much narrative about them they played an integral part.  Saving Gandalf and party from the Wargs in the Hobbit and then turning the tide in the battle of five armies.  An eagle rescues Gandalf from Orthanc and then Gwaihir the Windlord himself found Gandalf (at the behest of Galadriel) after he fell in Moria.  It seemed fitting to me and a little common sense that the eagles would be sent to find Frodo and Sam at the end of all things.  I can't read 'the eagles are coming' without wanting to punch the air

I had a stomach flu when I went to see the third movie, and we were only able to get seats basically right next to the screen.

 

I had to dash & throw up midway through the final battle.

 

I still don't know who won, other than last night's dinner.

If that doesn't get me to change, I don't know what will. A person, whom I've never met, travels half way across the planet, just to whack me.  Would make for a funny story.
