Okay, so he isn't conventionally attractive, but I like that about him, and he is masculine which I thought was an important trait for Iolan to have.  I may still do some tweaks, of course.

(Poor in Brazil = works 10~12 hours a day and earns around US$ 300~500 a month.)

My god, how scary and upsetting. :( That's not fair for them at all...

Indeed! But the poor in Brazil do it by the thousands. >_> The govt. should build houses for them and provide proper transportation so they may go to work, but it doesn't.

There is even a huge city within a city called Rocinha (there's no translation for it in English, sorry ç.ç).
It's hundreds of thousands of houses on a huge mountain slope. Approximately 300,000.

And there's a tunnel in that mountain connecting 2 important parts of the city. Whenever there's a flood, you can imagine the disaster that ensues...people just can't go to work.

And I won't even get started on the violence and the drug dealers that haunt Rocinha...it's like, everybody knows it exists, but pretend they don't.

Those are favelas right? I've heard a few stories about them.

Doesn't Brazil have a corrupt Government though?

Yep.  ^_^ Thousands of people living in small houses, usually on mountain slopes.

Because they earn such a low wage, they can't afford to rent a regular one. So, they build it with their own hands.

Hence why they're so fragile and are destroyed during the floods.

VERY corrupt. The amount of taxes we pay is equal to that of Switzerland. However, most of the money is never invested in the maintenance of public services or social security.

It's a disaster. And with the govt. now having a fiscal austerity policy, there will be more unemployment, which results in more violence.

Make sure you're safe where you are, Delilah, aright? I worry for you in that kind of environment. :/

Do you live in one of the favelas or do you live in one of the more well-of areas? You don't have to answer that if you are uncomfortable with the question.

Yeah I've heard some surreal stories about favelas from one of my old jujutsu teachers.

It put my own experiences of growing up in a rough area in a fairly well off first world country into perspective.

There are certain neighbourhoods where you can go without there being much violence. But even as I walk on the street, I avoid wearing jewelry or anything that invites robbery.

And never remain outdoors after dark. If so, make sure you have proper transportation to go back home.

That's a common Brazilian safety precaution.

I live near a favela, but it's a small one.

There have been some attempts of drug dealers to try and settle there, but the neighborhood managed to get the police to kick them out.

If they hadn't done that, there would be random robbery, people on the streets smoking marijuana or using hardcore stuff (coccaine, etc) and war between policemen and drug dealers.
