So if I am playing an offtank and have the Bodyguard skill and I am bodyguarding the tank and he currently has guard up. If he takes a hit will it reduce the amount of guard he loses because the damage is split between us or does bodyguard come into play only with actual health points and not reducing damage taken to guard.  I tested it with Blackwall (Nightmare mode) and tried to split damage when we both have guard up but it doesn't seem to work maybe I am not seeing it right? Just curious.  I am sure the skill is meant for the squishes in the party and not tanks splitting damage.. It was an idea I had lol..

on top of which guard is only 1/4 of total health and enemies can wipe half your health if you arent careful

Guard is actually treated like health, and any damage reduction to health you get applies to guard (so melee defense %, fire resistance, etc). Barrier does not get these bonuses, it takes all the damage.

As for bodyguard, I think it should, but there is little discussion on the internet and I don't use it myself. From what I found:

 

"Bodyguard only works for nearby teamates, a circle follows you around its about the same size as blessed blades (maybe a little bigger)"

 

So possibly you weren't close enough when testing. But yeah, for definitive evidence you should try to record a brief session with FRAPS or something, testing with full guard on the tank, have him go in first and lock aggro but not fight and then standing right beside the tank to see if you are taking any damage. Though you should be able to see it without recording but it always helps to not be in the heat of battle.
