I'm interested in hearing you people's opinions on companions/advisors, a short list if you will, not a long winded story on why. Sure I'd like to hear opinions and there are many such threads, but this is just to come up with some kind of average on liked and disliked characters and how much they differ from person to person.

So, here's mine:

Liked:
Cassandra
Blackwall
Iron Bull
Cole
Solas
Dorian
Josephine

Disliked:
Sera
Vivienne

Meh (indifferent):
Varric
Cullen

There were none I really disliked (hope that doesn't skew the average :P ) but, for now, will file Solas under "mildly annoyed with". Gonna wait until I do a proper 'elfy' elf romance PT to decide.

I'd have to list Varric under "disappointed". To me, he's just not the same guy he was in DA2.  :(

Liked:

Cassandra

Sera

Iron Bull

Dorian

Josephine

Vivienne

Cullen -- with caveat: would have listed under "indifferent" but when he joined in the singing after In Your Heart Shall Burn, it was just so unexpectedly cool that he gets +1000 respect. Also: Wicked Grace.

Leliana -- always. Even if she's kinda scary at times now, I'll never forget that night in the party camp during the blight when we

Spoiler

Jury is still out on:

Cole: Haven't really gotten to know him yet. Gonna change that in my current PT.

Blackwall: After my first game, I would have filed him under "toss off the tallest tower of Skyhold castle" but time heals all wounds, and in my second game I wasn't so annoyed with him. Plan on romancing him in my current game, so we'll see about this guy.

I like them all. No, seriously, I find them all interesting, even if some are more unique and intriguing than others.

Honestly, all of the characters were done well. Some were done better than others, but none of them were badly written. In fact, I'd say Bioware's writing has improved with every game they've done -- comparing the characters here with, say, BG2 or NWN is like night and day. The closest in terms of quality would be ME3, and that game had the benefit of two previous instalments for you to get to know everyone.

Eh, I liked everyone basically. I might be a bit peeved with Vivienne on occasion and am sometimes driven a bit batty by Sera, but I'm cool with them.

Disliked

Sera-To be honest worst bioware character i have ever seen annoying , childish and dumb (tops even merril) pretty much i wouldn't be suprised if bioware created her simple to annoy player

Blackwall-another character deluded that grey wardens are knights in shining armor as for rest if found him boring even his reveal wasn't shocking because pretty much as person that played dao and other games i could see through his lies.

Leliana-Writers pet and mary sue pretty much with almost whole cast praising how terrifying ,awsome and super genius she is pretty much she gets away with things would get her hanged in normal life and her mary sue epilogue is only confirmation of that and that pretty she deals with same problems she had in dao don't help.

Viviene-Mostly because i was disappointed becuase i thought this will be character that i will agree most and she turned out to be annoying and that type of character that makes everyone so dumb they can't respond to her to show how competent she is.

Indifferent

Josephine- I have no problem with her character and i would even like her if not horrible romance that was taken out of disney movie.

Cole-He has his moments when he is annoying and he has his moments that he have something interesting to say.

Iron bull-i just didn't care much about this guy neither i liked him or disliked.

Varric sadly as i liked him in da 2 here he was just to be broken puppy not comedian type same as it was with anders just less extreme.

Liked

Cassandra-Despite being cliche most of the time i even liked her for being somewhat realist and competent.

Cullen-Same as above.

Solas-I rly liked his unique views on many matters in thedas and we have smiliar views on freedom sadly it seems that bio wants turn him into another flemeth what may change my opinion about him.

Dorian-Character with some sense of humor varric died so im glad he is in this game.

Loved:

Vivienne - Great idea to include such a character in a game and humanize her. There are many sides to Viv.

Cullen - really liked how  multilayered he is too and I kind of feel that he was written with special care.

Cassanda - really nice take on "strong woman" ™ and also I felt very connected to her.

Liked:

Blackwall - I wanted to gag him on several occasions but as a character he works really well.

Iron Bull - good portraying of a conflicted man. (i'm a bit conflicted about the bdsm part though)

Sera - another well written character. I like the dynamic she had with IQ

Solas - another character that was written with special care.

Dorian - I have a friend who talks and acts like him, so it  made him extra real

Josephine - another character that could have been a cliche and yet wasn't

Leliana - I like this Leliana more than in DAO.

Slightly left on the side. I don't dislike them, but these two sort of blended into background:

Varric - maybe because I wanted more interaction with him

Cole - maybe because I didn't read the book, maybe because Cole is Cole and he just blends in.

As far as voice acting goes Viv, Cullen, Solas and Cassandra are my favourite. The way Cass pronouns "Solas" is sooooo sexy.

TL/DR

In my first playthrough:

Cassandra was basically the only companion I outright liked from the very beginning, and that only got progressively better as the story went on. That she was also the source of a few laughs was an instant win to the top spot in my group of favorites.

I was kind of neutral on Varric. I liked him a great deal in DA2, so there's some bias there, but being the "borrowed" companion did no favors, and I wasn't interested in more of the same from his persona in the previous game. I was glad to see that he went through some progress between then and now, and that he wasn't just wisecracking anymore. I liked him, but he was just there, and didn't feel that close, though this makes the most sense to me since he's part of someone else's "inner circle".

I kind of liked Solas, but it could be up and down with this guy. I liked his fascination and open-mindedness about things, but other times it felt like there was a big arrogant a-hole peering from behind his hairless veneer. So around the midway point of the story I sort of plateaued on the companion affection graph.

Admittedly, Sera actually annoyed me a little bit upon first meeting. I understood what she was saying, but it was all so abrupt and in your face that it was plainly obvious that people who are, well, more discerning with their patience may have little to none here. There were clearly character flaws that proved to be abrasive and and she was clearly crass and louder in general. At the same time, I greatly enjoyed the voice acting. It was considerably well done, I thought. Plus, I found her insight on things to be rather amusing, particularly what she thought of other people, and I enjoyed her commentary on quests. So I was surprised that she would rise to my top 3 favorite companions in the game.

I loved Vivienne's entrance, but for the most part, I remained neutral leaning toward negative through most of the game. I did warm up to her, but not until much later. I appreciated her character enough that it progressed to her giving my Inquisitor the formari ring. I could honestly say that I genuinely liked her, even if I didn't agree with her on a lot of things.

Dorian won me over pretty quickly, but I was beginning to fear that he was going to sound like a one-note song. I was relieved that he had so much more to offer, and he joined Cassandra and Sera in my top 3.

I wasn't sure what to make of Iron Bull. It didn't help that I could hear James Vega's voice, and while I love James Vega's character, I didn't want a rehash of him. Thankfully that didn't quite happen (the physical-minded meathead thing kind of showed through though). I was pretty neutral on Bull, and there were moments where I warmed up to him, but I felt that his character arc was resolved very quickly with the Chargers decision, and he basically leveled off after that. I like him, but he didn't offer enough to make me like him more.

Blackwall, well, he was just kind of boring. I liked the classical-seeming knight in shining armor kind of guy, so I was kind of leaning on like, but he just didn't have that much to say that I found particularly interesting, that is, until his reveal. I really loved that I felt conflicted about this guy, and I was honestly tempted to leave him to rot, yet I couldn't. Despite being a murderer and a liar, I greatly appreciated what his character had to offer, and I was glad to keep him around.

Cole was just plain weird, which I guess is good, but he felt like the extra that just lingered about Skyhold, which I guess made his roost in the rafters of the tavern all the more fitting. But with his companion quest, with which his state of existence was to be decided, and his sad dialogue about Corypheus (as a spirit), I really appreciated his tragic persona. I never even took him anywhere for any missions ever, but I didn't even care.

With Josephine, she was OK, but for most of the game, that's pretty much how it went. I couldn't think of any reason to dislike her, but I couldn't think of any particular reason to grow so much closer to her character. She felt like a secretary that just preferred to stay a bit distant, which I suppose is understandable, given her role, but there just seemed to be a lack of something, like an oomph that just about everyone else had to some degree. Diplomacy man. How does it work?

Leliana was kind of off-putting. Granted, this is obviously colored by my perception of her character across the three games, but her dose of intensity and all that Through A Sister Darkly stuff was something I felt could get old really fast. Mercifully, this was something I could affect so she remains on the warm side.

Cullen was a very unexpected surprise. I was sort of neutral leaning on like in the beginning, but I grew to love the guy as my Inquisitor's commander. He's just edged out of my top 3.

I guess there is no bad/ugly here, but rather that some just took me a longer time to really grow fonder of. There's seldom a companion that I could honestly say I dislike. I think Anders still holds that trophy, and I trust will do so for all time.

I like everyone!

Loved

Cassandra - didn't think I'd like her before DAI, but now I adore her. She funny, intelligent, kind, open-minded, passionate. What's not to love?

Cole - aside from being a fascinating spirit, he's adorable and just wants to help everyone. Plus, hillarious.

Sera - always brings a smile to my face, even though she can be frustrating. Making the effort to understand her is definitely worth it.

Josephine - another sweetheart, I really love her diplomacy angle and backstory for it. Romance is very cute and fluffy so far.

Solas - even before the big reveal, he was an interesting soul. So many stories!

Varric - I thought 'meh' in DA2 (how genuine can the storyteller be?), but I'm so fond of him in DAI, I want to replay DA2 to appreciate the hell out of him.

Liked

Leliana - mostly when she's on her 'softer' path, like DAO Leliana. Ruthless Leliana scares the cheese out of me.

Dorian - he's a sweetheart, and funny, though I still need to take him with me for a full run.

Vivienne - when I took her for a whole playthrough with Bull, and befriended her, she turned out to be marvellous.

Iron Bull - undecided for ages, but taking him in the party is hilarious, and his romance is pretty cute.

Cullen - was iffy about him at first, but his regret about Kirkwall/Kinloch Hold, singing, chess, Wicked Grace scenes are wonderful.

Haven't gotten to know Blackwall  very well yet, but I don't dislike him. He's just waiting his turn. Would help if he stopped bugging and disappearing for hours!

Tbh, I don't think I've ever hated any companions. Oghren was the closest I've come, but even he has his funny/sweet moments. Mostly I just have a 'let's just leave you in camp' feeling about him.

DA2s Varric is much more compelling, in DAI he seems more reserved, a bit sad even; certainly less funny. But, to be fair, DA2s is a story told by Varric so it's no surprise that the writing there for him is a little stronger.

I'm disappointed that this thread doesn't ask us to choose from Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef or Eli Wallach to play each companion.

Loved:

-Dorian- definitely the most likable character in DA franchise IMO.

-Solas- I loved him before DA:I release and now I love him even more. He's got so much potential for the future games and I can't wait to see what will happen.

-Cole- the most intriguing and original character I've ever seen. His banter is the best, because of his mind reading ability.

Liked:

-Cassandra

-Cullen

-Varric- I like him, but I must say I'm disappointed with the fact that he's not as funny as Varric from DA2.

-Josephine- she's so lovely! I like her pen gestures. lol

-Sera- seriously, I have no idea why, but I like her. She's so weird

-Vivienne- same like Sera

Indifferent:

-Blackwall- rather dull character, but I love his banter!

-Leliana- same like Blackwall

-INQUISITOR- yeah, because he's dull too. I need some headcanon to make his personality interesting. I miss Hawke.

Hated:

-Iron Bull- It's fine when he talks about qunari stuff, but it's completely covered by bdsm, embarrassing banter about sex and his relationship with Dorian. Yuck! I heard IBxDorian romance banter on youtube and I'm glad I'll never hear it in my game (because Dorian is my permanent DA:I LI).

He simply disgusts me.

In order

Loved

Varric - Has always been funny, and enjoyable, keeps it fun and light. Actually has a personal mission now, he always makes me laugh.

Cassandra - Her crisis of faith was refreshing and original, and I love her take-charge personality.

Cullen - Extremely different and fresh take on the drug addiction, get to see what he's like, and he makes it really feel like we're running a group.

Leliana - Her personality shines, her war table missions had some great humor, and her crisis of faith mirrored Cassandra's in emotion and believability.

Liked

Iron Bull - Damn hilarious, and straightforwardly violent, a great contrast to the rest of the characters

Cole - He was weird, alien, and foreign, and I play fantasy games with that in mind. And extremely adorable.

Josephine - Needed a little more, but her missions were full of intrigue, she also made it feel like I was running a group, and her civilian demeanor made the story a different perspective.

Solas - A little bit of a ****** regarding humans, but he was an original character who felt the most immersed in the world. And his talents were extremely unusual.

Liked and Hated at the same time

Vivienne - Full of herself to the extreme, but her talk about the mages was extremely reasonable, and there were times she was funny

Blackwall - Had a lot of unexpected snark, but needed a lot more.

Sera - Sometimes she was funny. More often, she wasn't.

Hated and had no redeeming features

Dorian - A storyline that was cliche twenty years ago, all the condescension of Vivienne without any of the humor, and a total bore to boot. Considering that the Keep will let me make changes, I just don't even take him along anymore.
