After an hour and a half on the phone, waiting, EA Games finally touched base with me and their lovely assistant went about helping me with this issue that I know many of you are also facing, regarding the debilitating lag and voice cut-off issues.

Here are the steps thus far.

1 - SP3

Besides the hardware system requirements, your system is also needs to be outfitted with Windows Service Pack 3. If you don't have that, you can get it at www.update.microsoft.com. If you're not sure if you have it, you can check by right clicking 'My Computer' and selecting properties. It should be at the bottom of the list below the title SYSTEM.

Downloading SP3 did not help my situation, however, and so I was sent up into the next tyr of customer support. The next two steps to take, they emailed me. I will post their instructions here.

2 - Clean Boot
How to perform a clean boot:

Hold the Windows key on your keyboard and then press the letter "R"
Type 'msconfig' in the text field and click OK

This will
bring up the System Configuration Utility
Go
to the Start-up Tab in the System Configuration Utility and then press
Disable All, then go to the Services Tab and check "Hide All Microsoft
Services" and then press Disable All
Press Apply
Close out of the System Configuration Utility and then restart your computer

3. - Manual Install

You can manually install the game using the following steps;

Right-click on the Desktop and choose New and then Folder.
Insert the game disk into the drive.
Exit any autoplay screen that may appear.
Open My Computer.
Right-click on the CD-rom drive containing the disk and choose Open.
Click on Edit at the top of the window.
Click on Select All.
Click on Edit again.
Click on
Copy.
Close the window.
Right-click on the New Folder on your desktop and choose Paste.
The game files will now copy.
When this is complete, remove all disks from any drives.
Open the New Folder.
Open the Setup folder.
Double-click on the Setup icon that looks like a computer.
The installation should now begin.

*******

I'll post my results as I get them,

Noneof that is particular new news to experienced users...but I have to ask, how the hell does doing that fix a lag/sound issue?

Please do reply, you peaked my curiosity now.

I have expended all efforts that I know of how to personally fix this. That done, I turned to EA and am in communication with them on how THEY think this might be rectified. I've gotten the distinct sense they are invested in helping and I thought that I might post their suggestions for me on the forums in case it helps anyone else. *shrug*

Didn't take it like that, mate. It was an intelligent question and had I not expended all ideas of my own, I wouldn't even consider these. But at this point, I figure they have a better clue of what to do than I do...even if it's just a sliver. And if nothing else, the first girl who was helping me tossed me a code for a $20 gift certificate for all this bull****, lol. We'll see where it goes.

Unfortunately in my case, step 2 was of no effect and having purchased my copy of Mass Effect of steam, I am incapable of trying step 3. As EA continues to work with me, I will continue posting their suggestions on this thread until a solution can be reached.

I don't see how it would help. Disabling sarvices may free you small amount of memory and processor time, but some of your other program might stop working, so you must be cautious. The game itself uses about 600mb of physical memory, so on systems with 2Gb Ram or more it have suffisient resorces. Of course if you don't have SP3 (windows XP) installed yet, you'd better do that, it wount hurt.

Do you have to clean boot AND do the manual install? Plus, will the clean boot affect my computer in any way?
