I think Calpernia is just a more interesting character, she's really damn cool. I'd love to see her in a Tevinter-centric game.
Who do you prefer? SPOILER HEAVY

Ignoring the storyline, looking at the characters as villains only..... eh......
Calpernia is perhaps more 3-dimensional, but I like Samson because he is just so deliciously smarmy and corrupted by his addiction. His face was designed very well; it screams addict with the sickly, hallowed out look. He looks like he's in the early stages of meth face. Plus, he has his own tavern song!

Personally I prefer Calpernia and enjoyed the Templar questline a lot more - although the Mage questline has its moments.

I prefer Samson, like already said we know him from DA2 and I actually liked him, I always told Cullen to have him reinstated. He was a good man who got punished for trying to be nice, of course that turned sour but it was a nice follow up for him and his part in DAI gave a little more meat to Cullen and his past.
Plus he is voiced by Gideon Emery so....yeah!

I'm currently doing my first Templar run and I definitely prefer the side missions you do involving Caplernia. She is coming across as a much more interesting character than Samson, who I always hated in DA2.
But like others here, I much prefer In Hushed Whispers. It's just a way more fun questline. Champions of the Just is decent, but meh. I guess it doesn't help that the War Table missions for Ser Barris have never shown up for me, so it feels like all that running back to the main hall to save his backside was a total waste of time ![]()
Alexius made for better staff.

Calpernia..
The Templar story makes more sense imo.
How does it not make sense?

Calpernia. I love it when you're able to reason with an enemy and convert them to your side or convince them to walk away peacefully.

I think Calpernia is more interesting, but I like the mage questline more than I like Calpernia. I didn't even remember Samson from DA2.

I chosed Calpernia.
I saw the look in her face. She reflected and searched her moral. I reward that.

Calpernia, mainly because the templar quest-line doesn't have the headache of time travel. I also find her a little more compelling, Samson was needlessly a character from Dragon Age 2.

I hated the Redcliffe quest. Creepy time warp stuff... And once it's over, you don't hear a darn thing about how the mages are helping the inquisition while the Templars are out there kicking butt and taking names, Fiona stands around like she's on downers--what is she now, the tower librarian? Samson comes into the story so late he may as well not be there at all.
Champions of the Just was much better. However, Calpernia comes into the story late as well without much of a back story, so my decision is based on who fights on my side. Whether or not you conscript them into the Inquisition, the Templars rock!

Calpernia's character is much more compelling than Samson's (and I like what happens at the temple of Mythal with her), but I much prefer the "siding with the mages" questline than the other way around, especially the time travel quest, plus the Alexuis/ Felix storyline is a very tragic one: both are great characters and I wish there could have been more villians like Alexius in the game.

I like Calpernia better than Samson, but I like everything else about the mage side better.
Sorry, Calpernia.

I would have preferred both being in the game regardless of who you side with. No matter what, Corypheus still has both Venatori and Red Templars following him so they could be the commander of each faction. Serve as Corypheus' Right and Left Hands.

Personally, I haven't encountered Calpernia - I played Champions of the Just, but it didn't seem to flow as well with the rest of the story for me. You just kinda off-handedly learn about the demon army and Celene's assassination, while they're major plot points in the dark future.
Though I think Samson has an interesting story that, by him being this connection from DA2, is very engaging. He says at the judgement that he joined up with Corypheus because he gained purpose from it. Seeing the way that the templars can be discarded by the Chantry, I think that's an important narrative note we need - as much as the mages are oppressed by the templars and Chantry, the templars are victims as well.

I fully support this idea - if Corypheus is a dark reflection of Leliana, as Patrick Weekes said, why not have Samson and Calpernia act as dark reflections of Cullen and Josephine, respectively?

That's an interesting point you bring up about the Templars, even Cass brings it up after her companion quest; I admit I've never been too fond of templars in general, but I also feel like there's something very tragic about the order and what it has become.

I'm with the Samson crowd.
I found his story in DA2 interesting and it was neat to see his story continue.
Definitely liked the feels in this story line, especially with the Cullen angle sewn in.
Unfortunately for me, I find that I enjoy "Champions of the Just" more than "In Hushed Whispers", mostly because of Cole, so it's always a hard choice to make.

Even though siding with the mages is my canon, Calpernia is a much more well-thought out character in my opinion. Samson is just a douche.
I wish she was a mandatory villain in this game, not an optional one. ![]()
