If you are like me you probably like (role) playing around with your custom character. There are tons of great idea's and builds on this forum on how to play everything from a 2 handed templar to close ranged artificer. However, you are not alone! You have more party members then ever that can accompany you on your journey. Sadly when I try to look up what to do with them I came up short handed. Thats why I decided to give a go to some NPC Companion builds!
First of all, I think that every character has its own strenghts, due to their class that they receive once you are in Skyhold (I Keep typing Skyloft or Skyhaven T_T). However, I think every character also has enough skills to have synergy with the rest. Thus, in my opinion, if I let my inquisitor loaf around my team, however I set it up, can hold it's own against most foes.
The builds I post are post Skyhold and focus on easy to use skills for the NPC that require nearly no micromanagement. I try to list some ideal equipment as well, although figuring out all schematic is a pain so if I miss anything please lemme know so I can edit it.
My knowledge isn't that great yet either, but I figured I had to start somewhere. All this is based of partymembers getting at least 2 amulets of power.
Lets start with the warrior first
Cassandra, Templar
Although my main tank in the beginning, she turns more to a bulky support in later game, great for many mob encounters, especially demons and the like.
Blackwall, Champion.
Said to be invincible, mainly due to his spec. Great boss tanker but doesn't quite pack a punch. But that's ok, he has a cool beard.
Iron Bull, Reaver.
Not much experience with him except for his fantastic dialogue. If you build him well you will have no problem with Reaver. Watch out with him though on heavy hitting bosses.
Varric, Artificer.
My 2nd favourite companion is back (I miss Fenris and his sweet Balthier voice!) and he packs a punch. Although he is stuck with Bianca which does under for some bows, the upgrades he gets compliment his class nicely.
Sera, Tempest.
You love her, you hate her. To be honest I find her quite funny although I miss the points sometimes. Hard to please, but easy to put into combat.
Cole, Ass sinner.. Errm Assassin.
I like assassins, but rather in my own hand then in the hands of an NPC. Deadly skills are often used on the wrong character, and on bosses they get in the way often or get hit every other attack. Thus I build Cole a bit defensively.
Solas, Rift Mage.
You get him really early on and he remains solid throughout the game. I rarely switch in the other mages although the have their uses. Riftmage is a really supportive spec that enables some nice Cross Class Skills.
Vivienne, Knight Enchanter
Knight Enchanter is kinda OP at this point. Even without manual input Vivienne can be a monster. Due to the small skillset needed for a good KE you can put many skills in other spec's to try out things. I go for Lightning since static cage has some nice synergy.
Dorian, Necromancer
To be quite frank, I like Dorian, it's just a shame that his spec can be such a nuicance. Necromancer has some fun stuff but after the battle you will be waiting for its effects to wear off.
Pfft that's it. Put some hours into this that I could have spend killing more dragons
. These builds are all based on Patch 3 of the game (on ps4) and are of course subject to my opinion.
If you feel like I have made a grave mistake that needs rectification, or if you have a suggestion to vastly improve this, lemme know or send me a PM.
Last but not least, I optimized the gear for the companions, so if you take gear for your inquisitor then you might need to switch some accessories around.
