The crashing is getting ridiculous.

Black screen crashes. Sometimes white screen crashes. Most common though are probably the crash-to-desktops with no warning or errors. Sometimes direct X crashes. I've only had like 3 in total of those out of 500 hours though, and I think all 3 were after patch 3.

It's seriously ridiculous how much this game crashes. It happens a lot more in the multiplayer but it does happen in the single player and often enough for it to be spoken about.

This needs to get looked at, because its ridiculous at this point. (also myself and others noticed it happening more frequently after patch 3)

Just to make sure, had you recently updated hardware or hardware drivers?

My play through of DAI was once every few hours of solid gameplay.....just a sudden freeze during a cut scene or CTD.

I'm using the latest whql nvidia drivers, clean installed.

Nothing over - clocked.

Lots of power, 1000W PSU

24GB ram

i7 CPU stock

Win 7 64-bit ultimate all updates

I also disabled the origin launcher, meant for multiplayer, etc.

Still does it from time to time.....scratches head

This is the only game that does this to me and I have a lot of games.

Are you using an overclocked GPU?

The FB3 engine is notoriously fickle and even though my own GPU is overclocked a solid bit and I never had issues, lots of people (from Bf4 which uses the same engine) reported that lowering GPU clocks helped alleviate the issues.

It might be win 7. What's your GPU?

I had the same occasional crashing before and after updating driver.

Using gtx 980 / win 7 64bit

FINALLY someone else reporting this problem too. The CTDs are insane after last patch I can't go 20 minutes without a crash when transitioning to new area. Happens on SP and MP both.

I'm running windows 7 also with 2 GTX 980s (latest drivers). I have an i7-4790k processor and 16 GB of ram. Temp on GPUs is within normal limits.

The damn thing just crashes. Never happened prior to the last patch.

Drivers really?  Did you also check if it was plugged in?

Sarcasm aside, more often than not your character is simply placed onto the game space improperly and effectively bounced off the game map to some "other" location.  Inquisition has had this problem since day 1 and black screen, tossed outside the world space by some degree and stuck or frozen are often all symptoms of the same thing.  These are usually instabilities in the game mechanics and only the scale of errors determine the type of failure. Their code is not compensating properly for the active boundaries that frostbite uses to create special effects - modeled like mirror facets on all the surfaces.

This is the cost of doing business with this technology and error checking should make it a non-issue.

There is also an issue with the com system that increases this probability or error rate, as too many times Inquisition simply fails after a cut scene in MP, but works perfectly in private.  This same com error in SP causes freezing and control issues among other things.  Fix the Com bandwidth Bioware!

Yes, and it often is almost like a bunch of inept children creating patches as they clearly do not seem to understand the issues, when they consistently make mistakes and make things worse.

I crashed to the desktop with no error. Probably happened 10 or so times over the course of my 100 hour playthrough.

To me it sounds like the bugs you describe are tied to the FPS workaround.

Hmm, if that's the case, then it's the same issue the Sims games have had for ages. Maybe I can modify a mod I use to correct it in those games to fix the off the map problem.

Could be an NPC off map as well, might be able to get the Overwatch mod (well the part that recovers missing characters anyway) to work in DAI and periodically put any character that is off world back where they belong.

Except I suspect it has something to do with the recent patch. Frostbite or not, I put in 250 hours into this game without more than two crashes. After last patch, I've had close to 40. I stopped keeping track after awhile.

Yeah I've definitely noticed more crashing after patch 3 as well, but it always crashed occasionally.

On another note I've tried leaving the card at stock values and the game experienced crashes both at stock settings and at overclocked settings. So keeping your card at stock values isn't increasing your stability in this game.

My full system specs are:  (all latest drivers/bios)

  • i7-2600k @4.5ghz
  • EVGA GTX 980 4GB
  • 8gb 2133mhz
  • SSD - Samsung 830 series
  • Windows 7 64bit

It could also be a DirectX problem?

I play for 40h+ now and didn't encounter a single crash using mantle and windowed fullscreen with an AMD R9 290X (14.12 driver version). Most of the detail settings are on Ultra (using automatic detection).

My sessions are usually between 2-6 hours playing, then I need a break :P

I think in all the time I had the game (end of november) I had the game crash twice. One of those times was just now when I was in Crestwood and opened my inventory. My Inquisitor didn't load and I was stuck with a black screen with 'inventory'. It kind of scared me tbh. I hope it was a computer brain fart and nothing more

Had this problem since patch 3 came in.

Stock 3570k, AMD 280 & Windows 8

Was perfectly fine before hand

I was getting CTD even before the last patch and I had to run the game on windowed fullscreen because fullscreen crashed the game

Haven't tested the game after the latest patch came out

Is it the same problem?

I've been getting these crashes in windowed full screen. When I play in fullscreen the crashing actually gets worse lol.

Then it's not just an NVIDIA or window's 7 problem at least.

I've played in full screen and windowed both. Turned MSAA off, scaled down textures, etc. Reinstalled NVIDIA drivers. Even attempted a full backup of the game and redownloaded patch. Nothing works. Still crashes.

Engine mechanics or not, I can't help but think this is solely a patch problem.

do you use Mantle or DirectX?  does it make a difference if you switch between APIs?

did you do a clean install (uninstall the drivers, reboot, install the new drivers, reboot)?

I have a 290x, I'm using Mantle, I've never had any crash or freeze after I clean installed the beta, and later the official AMD drivers.  I played a bit of MP since patch 3, did not play SP with that patch though.

Also, is it really Windows 8, or is it 8.1?
