I will start out by saying that I don't really pay attention to the fanbases of books, films, games and shows all  that much, so i have to ask...why do fanbases kill each other over the shipping?

 

What I mean is people like pair their favorites characters up romantically, and the characters vary from person to person. What I ask is why are people so hostile towards each other when it comes to shipping? It seems like a silly thing to obsess over, yet I notice its a common thing that occurs among fanbases across all shows, and games and films.

 

So simply I ask...why do you people obsess over shipping?

Hell if I know. Its silly. I see shipping as an innocent and funny thing to get behind, nothing to get worked up over. Other people treat it like its a life or death issue.

 

I guess some people prioritize better than others when it comes to their fandoms.

I'm pretty sure some people have gotten p.o.ed with the developers for contradicted something they imagined in the first place.

I shall actually attempt to answer you OP.

I don't get the shipping either. Used to be, I'd watch a show and I'd trust the authors to deliver what they thought was the best thing for their characters to do. The characters would have convictions, be consistent, make mistakes, hopefully learn and grow or just continue to be idiots or bastards. It's the creator's vision, and if I didn't like it I'd just change shows.

Now, people seem to want to direct the show (I think a lot of this manifests as fanfic and even worse slashfic). They want things to happen they way they want, instead of allowing the author to tell their story and follow their vision. They seem to think that the louder they scream on forums, twitter, commentaries and the more blogs the make the more likely the author will do what they say. I dunno is this is narcissism, ego, or entitlement.

I don't understand modern fandom, but I think we're stuck with it.
