Sometimes the negative reaction to fans shipping certain characters stems from the shippers confusing their head canon for actual in universe canon. That can annoy other fans, particularly when the shippers shove their heads in the sand and refuse to see reason or actually pay attention to the story.
It's sort of like the blowback that the Indoctrination Theory got.
