Mass Effect Movie: What Should Happen in It?

Hey everyone JoeTheQuarian here. I've been reading a lot about the Mass Effect movie on the internet recently but I think fans are going about it all wrong. People keep saying things like "I want this person should play Shepard" and "They should cut the trilogy into more than just three parts". In my opinion these things aren't what we should be focused on.

If a movie was made on Shepard everyone would be upset. In the games you get to really choose how your Shep acts, who your Shep romances, Who your friends with and so one. The way I see it even if everyone made the exact same decisions in the games, and could possibly be translated to film with everyones consent, right now we already have the best version of Shepards story with us. ME fans fell in love with Mass Effect through the games and they were done flawlessly, better than any movie could do. Why Translate an already amazing thing to film. I'd be like translating Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones into movies.

Having said that, here's my suggestion: Make the movie not based on Shepard. There's so much more in the Mass Effect universe for us to see. Of course another option would be to make the movie on the ME comics or books but just not about Shepard. We already have the best translation of that (not saying the books and comics are bad representations of their respective stories). Personally I would really like to see a movie of the first ME book Mass Effect: Revelation.

Anyway, what do you think? Were you really hoping for a movie about Shep or do you agree with me?

If another Mass Effect movie is made then I hope it is not anime like Mass Effect: Paragon Lost. I do not mind anime, I just prefer live-action a lot more. Anyway, I would not want it to be about Shepard. Mainly because we already know his story. I would like it to be about a new guy who is not dealing with Reapers. Perhaps a smuggler with a crew who operates around Omega. He could be a ladies man, who also deals with some renegade-ish people. I would want the film to be a little dim in theme. You know how Mass Effect 2 is a little dark? Like neo-noir dark? I kind of like that.

Would it really hurt for the Mass Effect movie to have a female protagonist? Charlize Theron perhaps?

You can take the world and the general idea of the plot and retell it as a movie without using the same characters.

Humanity is a newcomer to the galactic scene, they're trying out a prototype ship when a distress beacon from a nearby planet causes them to investigate. The ground team, lead by Commander notShepard fights through a surprise alien invasion led by a mysterious figure and discovers a strange alien device that warns of galactic doom. The quest is on to discover and stop the figure and also unravel the mystery of the impending cataclysm before it's too late.

I would actually go further and say that you'd need to use most of the main elements in order for it to be a ME movie (as opposed to a generic sci-fi). Otherwise you end up with Doom the movie.

Besides, even if you did use the names "Shepard" "Liara" "Ashley" etc. people are gonna get that they can't make choices like they did in the games. They're also going to get that's it's a separate continuity and movieShep has nothing to do with the games.

If I was doing it, I'd do ME1, ME2 as a TV show/miniseries (like Agents of Shield for the Marvel Universe) and ME3 as the final, possibly split in two because that'll probably be what the studios want. A case can be made for it from a writer's perspective. Oh and it should go without saying that it'll have a proper, satisfying non-"art" ending.

What should happen in the Mass Effect movie?  It should be about Jack Harper.

Sigh... we keep going like this it'll be another "all female cast"...

I'm all for strong or balanced female characters in media but this Ghostbusters thing sounds like the dumbest idea I've heard in [insert suitable period of time].

Female pilot?

Only only if Seth Green is not available for some reason.

I love diverse casts. Male and female, both human and alien.

I don't want Mass Effect to be a movie at all, really. But I especially don't want a new story in this universe to be a movie either, because, well, that story could have been a new game, which I'd much rather have.

I'd rather the movie not happen, because Hollywood's track record with films adapted from video games does not inspire confidence. Nearly all movies based on video games have been terrible. The problem is that they don't get the same kind of treatment as the blockbusters developed from popular comic book series, or adaptations of popular books. They usually get made with a modest budget, which means you end up with hack writers, a director and a cast of actors drawn from Hollywood's C and D lists, and bad CGI and special effects. For the most part they just end up as cheap attempts to cash out on an existing fanbase without much effort put into making a decent film.

If a Mass Effect movie gets made however, I'd rather see an original story than an adaptation of the Shepard trilogy. In one respect a Shepard movie trilogy would be amusing though...they'd have to create a different ending for the third film. ME3's endings are unfilmable. Maybe one of the silver linings of the whole ending controversy is that it permanently scuttled any movie adaptation.

Completely agree.  I love the Mass Effect universe, but do not want to see a Mass Effect movie.  I loved the Wing Commander games as a kid and seeing Wing Commander starring James Vega/Iron Bull was nearly unwatchable.  I could have almost forgiven it if it had been made by someone who had absolutely no knowledge of the material it was covering, but no it was written and directed by the person who created the games.

Every once in a while I see people's lists for who they want to see play who, and I can't help but smile.  Would I like to see (insert A-list actress here) play Liara? Yeah. Do I think it will happen? No.

The Mass Effect movie has been in development hell for years now, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

As much as I don't want to see the films happen, I do enjoy discussing hypothetical cast lists from time to time. It would be interesting to see who they'd end up casting as our favorite characters, no matter how the films turn out.

Not the worst suggestion in the world, though might be tough to get that big a star.

I'm pretty much opposed to the notion of the movie though, as i think making a hollywood movie out of a player characterised and player choice story just is wrong in principle.

Probably not.

There hasn't been any news in a long time, so it is most likely stuck in in development hell. I think this was the last definite news about the project:

We all know what'll happen: They'll make two really good movies, then the third one will let us all down and make us wish we never started watching them in the first place.

It would certainly not. Though I would've liked for the movie to explore a story different from the trilogy. Not have Charlize Theron as female Shepard.

I have to disagree with you on that one. I love and believe video games are far superior to film. But I would still like to see things from the ME universe to film like the citadel and the mass relays. Those things would be amazing in a movie. Plus a movie would open up the universe to new fans and possibly be a reason the new game could sell some more copies.
