When canon was brought up by Casey Hudson, he'd say nothing is officially canon in Mass Effect. If that's the case, there's another possibility.

The entire ME trilogy is about how Commander Shepard was the one who stopped the Reaper threat. But what if this new protagonist in ME4 ends up creating a new canon? Similar to DLC's like Arrival where Shepard did the mission or didn't, or one character is alive or dead, the next Mass Effect series could involve how this character changes the outcome in ME3, and the original Trilogy is about how this character never existed. It could open the door to changing the future of the franchise, while keeping the old one the same.

The new protagonist having been one of the Marines on the Normandy in ME3? That would be kind of interesting.

But it doesn't make sense if they were shaped like a man and you want to be a woman or alien or whatever.

It will be the guy walking around saluting Shepard when activated. Because the game was rushed, there wasn't enough time to put a female walking around saluting Shepard when activated. The female would've been in the game when playing as femshep

I say the character saluting Shepard in the game will be the next main protagonist

Be real, everybody knows the next game will star Conrad Verner and his Volus compatriot Niftu Cal.

Jokes aside, if it's true this ME4 protagonist is doing things between the ME trilogy, if you truly believe the canon is in flux the same way time is in flux on Dr. Who, then it's possible this character could "change the future", or create it's own canon of events that's different from how they happened without him. When it comes to the old trilogy, this is what happened when this character doesn't exist. But if this character does exist, then we have the new future possibility. Not just with the ending of ME3, but other events throughout the series as well.

Why not let the ME4 take place between ME2&3? And the protagonist be a sort-of random Mercenary who has been hunting Archangel for the past forever? Thus, giving protagonist not only an enemy that he has no real way of catching but a strange tie-in to the original series. For example, the game lets player choose their race and "origin" and gets them acquainted with some characters and have your first job be the assault on Archangel's base and have Shep inevitably foil your attempts at killing Garrus. Your first crew killed and rep as a merc in tatters, revenge seems a viable option. So in "Hero's" hunt he/she has to take jobs, these jobs being at player's discretion and eventually leading to important events like being hired to smuggle a guy onto citadel only to discover at last moment he's Kai Ling, or having been hired in the assault to retake Omega not knowing of Shep's involvement. Or any other possibilities, but my suggestion was the protagonist be a Mercenary that had involvement, perhaps not directly, in the other games' stories. Thereby giving players a chance to alter the course of the ME timeline and go head-to-head against other heroes in the series.

While I'd like to play a Mass Effect game that takes place during the Rachni War, I don't think BioWare would make a game where you couldn't play as a human.

I see two possibilities for Next Effect

- a story that takes place alongside the original trilogy. For example we could play as an N7 Soldier fighting some Cerberus horror experiment or helping CSec with a noir style criminal investigation.

- a story that takes place so long after ME3, that the endings don't matter too much any more. Companions with long lives could, like Wrex, Grunt or Liara could form the link between ME3 & Next Effect. The nice thing about doing it this way is that we could see how the Alliance and the Council have changed since the Reaper War.

Either way I'd say we are going to be an N7 Soldier like Shepard or, if we can choose our race, a Spectre

When you really think about it - the Red option is probably going to become canon.

Why? Simple:

Blue option leaves you with a galaxy under the protection of goody goody cuttlefishes, nothing can really threaten this armada = no conflict - no story.

Green option is even more insane from story stand point: Synthesis is essentially Singularity.

Writing a post-singularity story is just not feasible, at least not for an AAA game directed at mainstream crowds.

My bet says that ME4 is going to be post-Reaper-War, and will assume Destroy was the option chosen.

That's not quite true. Control does allow for conflict on a smaller scale. While major interstellar wars would be settled using the Cuttlefish Robots, minor conflicts, crime, corporate intrigues, etc, would still be possible.

Synthesis, on the other hand, leads to NO conflict at all. Anywhere. Impossible. Because everyone and everything is plugged into Reaper.net and the Catalyst and the Catalyst controls everyone through Reaper.net.

What if the new hybrid life creates pure synthetic life to aid it?

Then we will need a synthesis synthesis!

Well, they never said that this ME game had to be a trilogy, so I'd like it if they sort of did both. Maybe ME4 could actually run alongside either the whole trilogy, or just ME3 and some time beyond that, and and sequel could be set some years after. I don't really want a 'big' plot in ME4 with having to save the world, so ME4 could have a 'small' plot where the protagonist has to conduct a secret mission during the events of the trilogy. It could have a few subtle nods to the trilogy and it's characters and a few small cameos and  ME4's group could visit some locations just before or just after Shepard's been there so their actions could influence the others. This would allow some of our ME trilogy choices to be acknowledged in an interesting way. And best of all, if set during the trilogy, we could meet Legion, again!

I'm sure (and hope) that the ME series is going to have more than one more game, so they could do both of these ideas.
