So, I'm planning to romance Solas with my Levellan up until the whole sad break-up shebang and then I was going to go for Cullen. I've been using the flirt options when talking to them - obviously Solas digs it and Cullen takes a little more time but I'm not sure if it will work. I remember reading somewhere that apparently, Cullen will not pursue a relationship if you're seeing someone else. Like, it's not even an option in the game I don't think. But will it work if I'm broken up officially with Solas as long as I don't engage with him further until after that happens? Since I haven't actually completed the Solas romance myself, does it go too far into the game where romancing Cullen would be impossible? What do you guys think? What pairs do and don't work?
How does romancing 2 people at the same time work? Anyone tried it, yet? (spoilers in post!)

IIRC, once you "lock in" the commitment, you can't break up anymore. IDK for Solas (I heard that it's when
I do know however, that someone got a polyamory bug that allow her to continue romance Solas (after she broke up with him) & go to Cullen. Everyone & the game acknowledge only the Cullen romance but Solas still call her & give all the romance cutscenes.

I tried romancing both Sera and Blackwall with my lady dwarf and I haven't even completed the "March" companion quest for Sera (or the "Warden artifacts" one for Blackwall) and I'm already locked out of the Sera romance. There was definitely not a "choose this to romance Blackwall" option, but Sera just told me that she won't be second to anyone so I guess that's that. I was hoping to flirt with both of them, sleep with Sera, then end up with Blackwall, but I barely got to flirt with them both and Blackwall got locked in somehow.

Apparently you have to properly break up with your current romance to be able to start another romance. So maybe not asking Cullen to start the romance if you haven't break up properly with Solas yet?

That's how I got locked into the Blackwall romance my first play through. With everyone, I take the flirt options because they're funny. After two flirts with Blackwall, Cullen told my inq he heard she was involved with someone else.
Now, I could probably have dumped Blackwall at that point and pursued Cullen. But Blackwall seems to be the default. All the other companions you can flirt with a little and not have it go anywhere. I thought there would be something a bit more clear that a romance was starting as all the other romances seem to have that where it's spelled out loud and clear -- "select this to start a romance".

Cullen called my character out for spending time with Solas during the chess playing scene with him. I still have the start a romance option with Cullen so I hope it stays so she can use it later.

That's why I'm thinking it's maybe possible. You eventually end things with Solas regardless so maybe Cullen's an option still afterward?? I'm just going to save before I do any major dialouge/cutscenes in-case I can't lol.

I've yet to figure it out. I'm currently trying to romance Solas but keep Cullen simmering on the backburner.

Good to know, thanks!!

Well, I heard some folks telling me that it's definitely possible to change to Cullen after breaking up from Solas or Blackwall or any other romance. But only one got the Polyamory Bug when she could romance both. Normally you stop with Solas, it's for good. No turning back.

It does puzzle me how heart icons continue to show up even when you haven't actually flirted with that character since you reached Skyhold and you are in a romance with someone else and activated their romance tarot card. This is currently the case with my male elf, who had a couple of flirts with Cassandra back at Haven but is in a relationship with Dorian. Yet I'm constantly getting the heart icon when talking with Cassandra. Mind you when I talk with Dorian there is always the option there to break it off.
I think Solas is a bit more of a problem because there is no way to end things with him until you get to the conversation after the Arbor Wilds, which doesn't leave much time to rekindle things with Cullen before the end of the game. I know I went to play chess with him with my Lavellan girl and the heart icon came up, so just for the hell of it I thought I'd click on it to see what happened and he said that he thought I was in a relationship with Solas.
On the whole I tend to choose a romance and stick with it having come unstuck in previous games through people mistaking my playful flirts for something more serious and then it mucking up the romance I actually wanted.

It depends on the characters and how their romances are programmed. I know you can get pretty far with both Dorian and Cassandra concurrently, and then she'll bring up a jealousy comment at the point where she would have confronted you about the flirting which is where you can start her romance quest.

From what I've seen of disappointed Solasmancers- the break up locks in the romance!. You cannot romance anyone after that. Sounds stupid I know, but also sort of makes sense in RL way. If you were in love with someone and they broke up with you you wouldn't just turn around and "fall in love" with a friend immediately afterwards.
Or maybe you would. But as far as the game is concerned your romance is complete and you cannot romance anyone else. I will try to track down the thread I saw this in and post it back here.

If you think about Solas' words to his LI at the end of the game, it's pretty obvious he won't fully let her go and might return.

Really love the iron bull romance scenes and wanted to see them for myself. Romanced Iron Bull right through the scene where you give him the dragon tooth. Tried to break up with him during the dragon tooth scene- iron bull said something about me being ashamed of him and I couldn't take the guilt from how he said it and the way he walked out. So I reloaded and finished the scene claiming we were together. After this scene I went and broke up with him in the bar and he just said "ok boss". Didn't feel so guilty.
I had only played up to wicked eyes wicked hearts, and not adamant here lies the abyss. The entire time I was romance Iron bull I spoke to Cullen only twice. Once after skyhold, and once to get the Before the Dawn quest (which I flirted with him both times).
After break up was complete- I started the romance with Cullen perfectly fine. Though Varric still asks IB about our romance, but it's a minor bug and I like hearing the banter.
Just for the record- this is not something I would normally do. I really wanted to finish the IB romance but it just didn't feel right not to romance Cullen. Sigh.

Perhaps you can confirm then that the break up locks you out from romancing other characters? It would make sense if this is truly what Solas implied.

"What we had was real" is what he says if I recall from another post I saw. Meaning he loved his female Elf Inquisitor even after breaking up. Usually when you break off a romance it's over, or you can get it back later, but he breaks it off and leaves forever, so it's pretty stuck at that point since it's the character making the choice and not you.
My human IQ and him had a strong bond and he said he respected me and valued my friendship. He does come to love the IQ in different ways, and will never forget them if his approval is very high.

If you are looking for an 'official' confirm, then yes. If you play through the entire romance scene with Solas, even though he breaks up with you, you are locked into his romance. This is the only way to get his romance card. Considering romancers don't get the tower card [usually], and it is super late in the game, you can read into it as you like.
If you don't want to be locked into the Solas romance, then all you need to do is beat him to the punchline. When he takes you to the grotto thing, tell him you are no longer interested. He'll sad walk away, and you are free to romance another character.

You are not locked in with Iron Bull until your final scene with him, which is not the Dragon tooth scene, so you can give him the Dragon tooth, but still break it off successfully to pursue someone else after. You monsters he gave you his heart.
I know Dorian will not initiate a romance of you've initiated any kind of romance with anyone, but the option remains to initiate it after you've broken it off with them.
Even when I was completely locked into Iron Bull and couldn't break it off, Dorian was still there, willing to offer himself if I'd just break up with Bull first. >.> feelsbad.

He's sad yet he was just about to do the same thing? Sounds like his "breakup" was a hoax to make you think it's over, but by you dumping him, he can't ever return to you if he planned to in the future.

He didn't bring you to that place intending to break up with you. So yes, if you call it off with him he is sad.
