I haven't seen this amongst the myriad screenshot threads, so apologies if one exists somewhere in the mists of time... I thought it would be nice to have a library of desktop backgrounds we've created from DAI shots.
We won't all have the same desktop resolution, of course. I'm sure there will still be plenty of usable shots for everyone. I also expect MelissaGT and catabuca will be able to come along with some great contributions and tips.
Tutorial on posting here:
First, of course go into Options and kill the UI. If you don't have any screenshot tools, this is a silly manual process.
You can also check the option for "hide the quest tracker if no active quests," but it's buggy as heck. I have to jiggle around setting and unsetting active quests before it actually doesn't show one as active.
Here's what I do to avoid posting huge pictures in-line to posts.
I use Imgur, but I'm sure other online image hosts have similar features.
- Upload the final, high-quality image you're using as your wallpaper. Work with file size and compression to balance a good-looking scene with a smallish file size. Try to avoid 10 meg wallpapers
. It needs to be the resolution of your desktop to avoid resizing to bitmappiness. - In Imgur, you'll get a direct link to your final image like
h ttp://i.imgur.com/dYBOTs5.png
and that's what people can download to use. In imgur, it's the "original" link. But you don't want to post that directly in the forum! - Get a small version of your wallpaper to use as the thumbnail. Pro tip for Imgur: if you take your original URL from the above, and add a lower-case letter "s" to the filename, whatever it is: right before the dot, like
h ttp://i.imgur.com/dYBOTs5s.png
And that's the small version you post in the message. - Post the small image here, then click on it and click the "link" button in the edit window, and paste in the original URL (without the "s") as the target.
Now you've posted a thumbnail of your wallpaper, which is a link to the full-size image that will open in a new tab!
Here's one to start:
My current Windows wallpaper; Crestwood by moonlight. I tried capturing a lightning strike but it was surprisingly bitmappy, maybe I can adjust that with SweetFX or similar.
