Hawke feels like a living breathing person inside this universe. The only reason I have the Warden tied with him is because the Warden's set supporting characters are the best that I forget that the Warden doesn't convey as much personality as Hawke.

Let me also take this opportunity to say that the best Hawke is Direct Hawke, not the vastly-overrated purple/funnyman version.

Tallis: "What do you call it when you kill someone and take all their stuff?"

Hawke: "Tuesday."

(and I know of funnyman Hawke's response to the above... it's just corny.)

1) Sarcasta-Hawke

2) Warden

3) Sarcasta-Quisy

4/5) Waffles Hawke

4/5) Nice Quisy

6/7) Killer Hawke

6/7) Nasty Quisy

Really, Hawke and the Quisy have such variance in their performance based on their speech type.

Warden ---> Inquisitor ---> Hawke

I was just one of those people that was very disappointed with DA2 and it's repetitive locations and confusion about the story and my role in it.  I'll agree with the OP here however in that the Inquistor needed a backstory.  The reason the Warden was and is my favourite is that I got to see them and know a bit about them before the events at Ostagar.  I wasn't just thrust into the situation of becoming a Warden with the feeling that I didn't exist up until that point.  As a Dalish Elf at least as the Inquisitor, Solas hints that your clan sent you to spy on the events at the Temple of Andraste.  Knowing who my character was before the events of the game and generally having choices with regard to background would have been so helpful.  Admittedly, it wasn't just about the lack of ability to choose a race in DA2 that was disappointing, it was that I was saddled with the same background based on that restriction and I'm one of those RPG players in that I like to visualise and create my character as either a reflection of myself or a reflection of my greatest RPG fantasies.

And this is what brought DA2 down and not hawke. What if hawke had different backgrounds? I mean elves and dwarfs also lived at lothering, right? But then again Hawkes family changed depending on how the p.c looked, so maybe that complicated things. I agree that the DA2 system needed some more room for the self insert/ make character type, of players. What i dont agree with, is completly removing the DA2 system, and the lack of consideration for players who don't want to rp the protagonist themselves. I hate the inquisitor, because there was no iconic looking default, I could use. there was no personality I could enjoy, because veverything was overly neutral.
They had 4 VA who are restrained in how they can act, and all suffer neutrality to the point that pretty much the only difference is accent. They could have used two of those voice sets and gave them a more fixed personality, and had the other two as neutral.

The Warden. It just goes to show that a character doesn't need to be voiced to be sympathetic. I felt more emotion seeing my noble Warden lose his family than I did seeing Hawke's family meet the same fate.

So much this.  The blew the family component so badly in DA2 it was just sad.

Warden

Hawke

Inquisitor

I was really disappoited with the Inquisitor, the voice actor sounded bored and uninterested throughout. It was really hard stay immersed with the Inquistor's lack of expression. At least with Hawke, the voice actors were into it and Warden you can imagine how they sound like. (Ignoring their blank expressions of course.)

Though overall it's really close between the Warden and Hawke. I give the Edge to the Warden, because I felt more attached to him, though Hawke had more memorable lines.

Same here. Hawke is my clear favorite with his vibrant personality options. The inquisitor is pretty bland and only slightly more interesting than the Warden simply because he was voiced.

Especially Sarcastic Hawke! He. is. God.

I love all three, but I connected with Hawke the most. I love that I can create vastly different wardens and inquisitors, but I never connected with them as well as I do with Hawke.

Er, this was harder than I thought

There were good and bad things about all three of them.

I think I'd ultimately go with

Warden > Inquisitor > Hawke

on the basis of which characters were the easiest to self-insert into, as opposed to the feeling that I was directing a pre-defined character.

I just want to write that as a Hawke/DA2 fan after seeing so much Hawke-bashing in the board during that game for how many s/he is the favorite character. Not that any of the other choices are somehow more wrong or anything, but that one can simply write that without a horde descending here to scream how stupid/inefficient/utterly bad of a character Hawke was.

100) Inquisitor: Feels bland, tranquil, lacking in backstory, dull personality, kind of meh. It doesn't help that the elf male version has a painfully horrid body (noodle arms, zero shoulders, anorexic body) and the qunari version keeps you distracted with a head/neck constantly clipping inside the armor. I didn't try the dwarf out of fear of the headache when looking a beard that is unattached from the skin

Personally: [1] Warden, [2] Hawke and [3] Inquizzy.

Tbh, I think part of my preference for my Warden lies is due to the personality that I projected onto her but it says something about the game that I was able to. Yes?

And, okay, I can't be the only one who actually likes that Hawke isn't the Saviour of the Known World Pt. 2...

@AWTEW: Agreed in that Hawke did not bring DA2 down, the restrictions, repetition and confusion did.  The voice actors were much better for Hawke then they are for the Inquisitor, and Sarcastic Hawke in particular was hilarious, but I had a lot of difficulty connecting with Hawke.  Probably because of the way I play these types of RPGs, the fact that I was restricted and unable to alter/choose my character's background and play the game the way I wanted to play was too disappointing for me to overlook.  The Inquisitor, I suppose, was easier for me to find some connection with because they completely lack a background, which is why my Warden will always be my most favoured companion.

Inquisitor
Only if they're dalish. But I also enjoyed chance to express emotions, and I found balance between tact or lack of it more useful than the old good/evil selection.

Hawke
I love how much their story has personality, and "smaller than life" moments where you have to try to figure out if you're being lied to or not. That felt pretty real and well thought. Especially fun if you go with dorky jokes, regardless are you having a laugh or do you think that's Hawke's way to cope.

Warden
Despite their dialogue selections, I felt like there was only one way to play as warden and that was someone tad insensitive (even when they're kind-hearted). I didn't sense particularly big stories about them being left between the lines. Conversations felt sometimes like the other character was just having a monologue. Warden does meet most interesting variety of npcs during their journey, so DAO comes of as a strong game because of them. Backstories don't really affect the main story (as I'd rather not play as a slave to one's past), though they too added to seeing more aspects and sides of Thedas. It's not like I wasn't fond of my city elf, just enjoy more of how later DA heroes participate in their stories.

Warden.

Warden should have been more but they pissed away the origins once you left that part of the game and it was generic hero time.

I totally get what you're saying, but it's totally the reverse for me. I feel nothing for the Inquisitor, at all, period.  I really couldn't suffer through another game with them; unless the devs can balance between the DA2 system, and this neutrality thing they have going on.

I'm curious. DO you think if they had given the option of the dwarf/elf races, less recycled mess, and added say fourth neutral tone. Would you have enjoyed DA2 more?

@AWTEW: Very likely I would have, and I understand what you're saying about the Inquisitor.  Perhaps I'm looking at this all wrong and what it is about DAI that's winning my favour is not the protagonist but the companions.  There were a couple companions I liked in DA2, one is my little picture here, but I had difficulty tolerating the others and I generally love nearly all of the companions (sorry Vivienne) in DAI and did also in DAO (though I disliked Leliana and Morrigan).  But in answer to your original question, I get off track easily, yes.  If I'd been given a choice of race, varied environments and felt more connection to the story I likely would have enjoyed DA2 more.  I did play DA2, several times though so while I was incredibly disappointed with it, it wasn't my least favourite game of all time.
