I just want to write that as a Hawke/DA2 fan after seeing so much Hawke-bashing in the board during that game for how many s/he is the favorite character. Not that any of the other choices are somehow more wrong or anything, but that one can simply write that without a horde descending here to scream how stupid/inefficient/utterly bad of a character Hawke was.

Yeah, I recall there being no shortage of people lining up to bash the heck out of Hawke, trying to bestow the title of Dumbest BioWare Protagonist (even though Commander Shepard should technically get this title for a number of reasons). Funny how this all works.

Warden

Inquisitor

Hawke

I put Hawke last only because I was became attached to just one incarnation of the character. With the Warden I have at least two that I loved and same w/ the Inquisitor. The Inquisitor first seemed quite bland, but after playing different races and fiddling around w/ different dialogue choices I came to appreciate the freedom a lot more. Still doesn't hold a candle to a character you can pretty much make up in your head like the Warden though.

Most Favorite: Warden Amell.

As much as I would love to play my Warden again (especially with new gen, voices and *gasp* expressions!) I'm also glad I can't/more than likely never will. It gives me the ability to write her story how I see fit. I do fan-fictions about her and have put her in DA2 and DAI in one degree or another. She is the one I have most invested in and have built up

Least Favorite: Hawke.

Sorry Hawke. I just never felt a connection to Hawke like I did my Warden or even the Inquisitor. I don't hate him/her, I loved DA2. But I just didn't feel the connection

I don't have a favorite. I liked the Warden because I could mold him into my own thing with quite a bit of latitude. I liked Hawke because her voice and semi-set personalities made her come alive as a character, a part of the world. The Inquisitor seemed like a not entirely successful attempt to find a middle ground, but I still enjoyed her.

1. Hawke

2. Inquisitor / Warden

Hawke was more closer to how Shepard was written and thus it felt like navigating a storytelling about another person more than roleplaying how you would behave which is something I like a lot.

Warden served good as lore menu but her replies always felt blank, lacking any real emotion. Inquisitor is similar to Warden in many ways. She feels more like a nice girl from the next door you don't remember much.

The Warden, Hawke or The Inquisitor?

Who is your favourite and least favourite? and why?

Most Favourite- The Warden

I loved the origins we had at the start of the game really fleshed out the wardens back story, also loved the fact that there was so many different play styles we could choose from do you want to be the good guy? the Witty one? only in it for profit? the ends justify the means? "evil" guy? the flirt? loved the variety we had in origins.

Least Favourite - The Inquisitor

Lack of any backstory when it was sorely needed and the dialogue options were very mute when compared to Hawkes and the wardens (the irony). There also wasn't much opportunity to showcase your inquisitors personality it just felt as if you were asking questions 24/7. The agressive options in inquisition aren't aggressive at all they were somewhat passive. Very bland.

Agreed I will also add that because the Warden was not voiced I got to decide if a line was snarky or aggressive or world weary or understanding which added dimension, nuance and subtle textures to each different roleplay which was yet another reason I could play through with several different Amells, Tabris' and Solana's and even when the text was the same the character was unique to that playthru.

This is definitely true, I don't like diplomatic Hawke near as much for example. But then I feel like this is something you do with each of the games to an extent, it's just that DA2 only had that one choice. In the end it's a different premise, in the sense that you just have Hawke to assign your personal touch to. So if you are the type to want more freedom for your protagonist, I can definitely see why Hawke would be the last choice. I'm sort of okay with either case; it's more sensitive when you pick up a named character though. If you don't find what works for you, it's difficult to get into it. I've got this problem with a certain white-haired monster killer in another game series. I just can't identify with him at all, so that part isn't as enjoyable as it could have been.

Anyway, unrelated to that I'd just like to add also that it's incredible how different your protagonist can feel in different playthroughs depending on what companions you bring. I think the hardest one to play for me would be the one that leaves all companions at home, which is odd because it goes against my instincts outside of the game - not always wanting companionship. Maybe you sort of picture them as "one unit" in terms of affection.

Favorite - Hawke - Snark!Hawke was actually funny, and had a rich and developed supporting cast around him: Leandra, Gamlen, Bethany, and Carver. I also felt like the world reacted to Hawke's personality with the special bonus dialogues for each personality type.

Least Favorite - The Warden. It literally baffles me how much people worship the Warden. There is no personality at all with this one, and, while the circumstances in the backstory are interesting, they do not shape the Warden's character unless the player makes a choice to make it.

Hawke, Warden, Inquisitor.

Hawke felt like a person. Mine was someone I'd like to meet.
The Warden was a blank slate, but the introduction to Thedas.

The Inquisitor was boring, and while I enjoyed some of the companions, I found the overall tale unengaging.

I actually connect more to the Inquisitor than Hawke or The Warden.

I love sarcastic Hawke to bits and pieces, but I felt like I could create numerous headcanons around my Inquisitor. I can be direct and no-nonsense, bored sarcastic or goody goody, but the lack of background just means more filling in the blanks I guess. It was easy to do that because they talked and decision making is one of the ways I characterize. There were bits and pieces of their life before becoming Inquisitor, but that's it. Worked for me.

I personally can play eitherway, because some people vocally demand to play in ONE certain way. I personally wouldn't have minded playing sarcastic Hawke across numerous games, but this "bland boring bored" Inquisitor is what we get because people didn't want a fully-fleshed out character.

Maybe something in the middle would be nice.

The Warden I never felt any actual attachment to despite the extensive Origins story.
