Vivienne vs Sera, opinions?

If you're a normal person you'd love Sera. For better or for worse.
And if you're a upper class, you won't chose Viv because she is and will always be more "upper" than you are.
If you're a normal elf, you'll hate Sera because she is a racist against her own (biological) kind.

Sera is one of the most aggressively close-minded people I have ever seen and Viv would probably hurl you under a bus if she smelled enough political gain. Personally I like Viv better, I find her banter funnier and she seems more honest. When it comes to herself at least. Otherwise the majority of what she tells you probably has some Game-related angle.

Vivienne by far. She's got amazing lines, awesome dry wit, combat ability, great voice, and she and Dorian are the prettiest and most fashionable mages in all the land.
With Sera it often feels like you're babysitting a wayward kid, which has its charm, I suppose. Take both, if you can, just not at the same time. Sera gets annoying then.

Beneath her bratty bluster Sera really does care. Her banter with Dorian and Cassandra is worth it.
Viv gets along with nobody and it is hard to take her condescension in conversations.
That said both are great assets in any party and I do not understand the need people have to discuss who should be jettisoned and why. BioWare have written some great characters with this game, warts and all, and I don't think there is a single character I wouldn't bring along. Now if you held a gun to my head...Sera would stay and Viv would go.

She gets along with Dorian, though it requires you to listen closely to more of their dialogue, and possibly even asking about it. She does respect Cassandra, and I don't recall her having it out with Varric at any point, though she questions his purposes for being in the Inquisition.
I refuse to not recruit anyone in any game if I can help it. I might kick a companion out, but it requires a great deal for me to do so.

I feel like Sera is less openly hostile to most other companions. Depending on my party, I have a hard time bringing Vivienne sometimes because she can be so needlessly hostile. I also tend to get irked by characters who always come out on top during banter. I'd be more forgiving if another character could one up her occasionally.
Sera and I don't agree at all, but she at least usually seems to be able to interact with most people without defaulting to mean.
Viv isn't necessarily 'hostile'; she's simply blunt and speaks her mind on the spot.
Come to think of it, Sera is no different. They just approach conversations differently (i.e. Sera tends to be more on the sarcastic side).

I did not pair her with Dorian as I rarely paired two mages in a party. I did take her out with Cassandra and her tone was just so snotty with Cassandra it was hard to see the respect there. But I probably tuned her out at some point! ![]()

Vivienne+Dorian = Awesome catty and gossipy banter.
It's a shame my first play through didn't have both of them often. But I expect that when I make my rogue, I'll definitely be including those two. Their banter gives me life.

I'd recommend that for the OP but you have to drop Cole. You could switch him in for Sera every so often though. You'd still get to hear the banters with all four of those characters.

I posted earlier that I'd pick Sera every time, but I have to say I had a great time listening to Vivienne rip Blackwall to shreds as we traveled the Western Approach in my last game
Romancing Blackwall this time, so I'll just keep Vivienne away from him, I think. Last thing my inquisitor will want is an emasculated boyfriend, no matter how impressive his beard is.

They're both pretty hilarious, especially if you take them with the right people. Neither of them get along with Cole, though Vivienne is mostly passive-aggressive and makes comments that go over Cole's head. He's supposed to offer a lot of insight into Viv's inner thoughts though, so that could be very interesting. Sera is more outright rude (for ages, she doesn't even talk to him directly). It gets better, with him trolling her (possibly unintentionally) and driving her insane. They remind me a bit of Fenris/Merrill.
Vivienne and Sera both seem get along with Dorian (in a snarky way), definitely fun to have along. I was actually a little surprised, especially with Sera. The two of them seem like polar opposites. Sera is also very funny to take with Cassandra, while Vivienne and Iron Bull's banters are great.
I've only taken Viv and Sera together a couple of times, but it's safe to say Sera can never win that fight!

I may have to try a two-rogue party now and then once I recruit Cole. Sera and Iron Bull are pretty good together too.

If I play the game again, I plan on making a warrior and using Sera, Viv, Dorian.

Two mages, eh? Sera's not gonna be a happy camper.
Though iirc she gets along rather well with Dorian. But Dorian's a pretty easygoing guy all around.
I didn't find Sera to be that hostile towards Solas. She responds negatively whenever he broaches the subject of her being an elf, but he's constantly doing it. You can tell Solas is frustrated in a lot of conversations, but it's much worse when it's with Vivienne, because she's clearly being condescending and he's breaking out a bit more sarcasm in return.
Well, different values of "worse", Solas and Viv fighting is hilarious. Especially when they try to out-passive aggressive each other. Still, I got the sense that they do respect each other on some level. Even if it's just as someone to match wits with.
Sera and Solas also have some amazing banter together. And yeah, I didn't think it was especially hostile either. Problem is, they're talking past each other a lot of the time. Solas tries to reach out to Sera with elfy stuff at first, and Sera shuts him down. Then he tries to give her advice on the Red Jennies, which just confuses her.

Vivienne is more interesting. Sera's 'jokes' become tiresome and repetitive...and they don't fit in with the rest of the game's style in my opinion. Varric and Dorian bring much better humour to the table than Sera does and it has a bit more class than what essentially boils down to 'lol buttz xDDD'.

I think I'm going to have to write a list or something, just so I can make sure I get to experience all the combinations at some point. I must take Vivienne/Dorian/Blackwall at some point, seems like it could be entertaining watching him defend himself from the witty mage double-team attack.

Tough one, i really dislike pompous Vivienne whereas Sera is extremely grating in bratty dogged uninformedness. I'd still go for Sera because there's the odd moment where she's funny amid the crude unfunnyness, whereas Vivienne has no redeeming qualities beyond the aesthetic.

Vivienne gets bested a couple times. She refuses to acknowledge it however, because she's Madame de Fer. She refuses to show weakness. Cole gets her a couple times however with his mind-reading ability, by publically revealing things she fears or that hurt her. And Dorian holds his own with Vivienne while trading zingers. I'd say Solas gets the better of her in one banter about demons and apostates as well, he just does it in a passive aggressive way.
While Vivienne owns a couple of the party members in banter (particularly Sera, whom she consistently crushes), she isn't without a couple losses.
