The archers is a sniper. Give him Punched by the Maker to maximize his longshots, and don't pull enemies before the tank does, unless told to do otherwise.
The Hunter is a lot like a shot gun infiltrator from ME3, if you played that. Give him Bow of the Griffon and get up close. My favorite skill with Him is Toxic Cloud, since bow damage has such high base daggers compared to the Alchemists' toxic cloud and lower base damage from a main hand damage.
Also, don't use Long Draw on him. You won't often be able to hit a mob at full health. Stealth-> Leaping shot is better, IMO. It can one shot Arcane Horrors.

Archer is squishier than the Hunter, because of the lack of stealth, but can pump out damage from a safer distance too. Hunter is high risk, high reward with a ton of build diversity, compared to Archer.

archer is mid/long range with higher dps, hunter is short to mid range with better survivability. archer scales better with gear and promotions as hunter is more focused on single targets. hunter has more variety with a few different viable builds, compared to archer which leans mostly on spamming longshot and leaping shot.

Hunter = great hat.

Don't see why you need any more reason than this.

Also, differences in gameplay and whatever that other people mentioned already. But mainly the hat. And if you're running that Inquisition something or other, might as well just delete the character. Just sayin'.

The hunter is a trapper, elemental mines + toxic cloud and add some ranged damage to that makes the hunter formidable. The archer on the other hand is pure ranged damage. In my eyes, the hunter is the more diverse in a lot of ways.

My personal kit would be Fallback Plan + Toxic Cloud + Leaping Shot + Evade or Elemental Mines, depending on the difficulty.

There is no versus - just leave being an Archer to the Archers, and make some use out of all the wonderful skills you get. Mobility and crowd/aggro awareness is key.

A hundred times this.

People should stop comparing them like that. Playing a Hunter with the ever popular Full Draw + Stealth /w Knife In The Shadows is almost a waste in my opinion, cause the Archer is still going to be "better" at what you're trying to be this way.

Theres a lot, he's got a diverse build.  It might be simpler to give a general description of his abilities and play pick and choose, since any combo seems to work.

Stealth + Leaping shot is always a classic combo.

Fallback plan is a love or hate skill, give it a test and see how you like it.

Toxic cloud is a nice AoE damage ability, but can be a bit overkill unless your on perilous

Spike trap is a fun, small aoe knockdown that pairs well with stealth.

explosive shot is a cheap and low cd aoe damage, along with single target knockdown.

Full draw is a high damage ability that can be done form stealth, but tends to be overkill and is only single-target.

Elemental mines would best be saved for alchemists, as he cant pull it off as well as her.

Currently im running stealth, fallback plan, spike trap, and toxic cloud.  Its pretty fun, head in placing your traps and returning with fallback plan before death.

It is said that the chain + grapple can be paired with leaping shot in mid animation of the grapple. I'm going to try this next, maybe together with stealth and either explosive shot or poison cloud.

I like hunter better even though archer has the better overall dps.

hook & tackle + leaping shot +evades with hunter is great but gets ruined by rubberbanding, so only really manageable if you are host.

stealth hunter is nice if you are in a weak room as you can stealth revive and support with aggro and kiting. being stealth hunter I often find myself being last man standing who has a chance to revive or solo, compared to archer being pretty much dead if everyone else drops, nice thing is kiting most enemies away, stealthing and then running back to revive.

stealth, leaping shot, full draw and then toxic cloud or explosive shot (flip a coin) feels the most solid perilous hunters for me. I kinda like having evade too and being more close range with leaping shot but have gotten on the wrong side of lag too often with it.

Interestingly, I see about even amounts of archers and hunters in perilous. while archer is all dps on everything it is pretty exposed no matter how far behind everyone it stands. hunter is single target dps + crowd control support and then some survivability (stealth + leaping shot/full draw on strongest target, evade & stealth to drop aggro)

I tend to alternate between the two of them on whim.

This is for perilous only, other difficulties we don't care

Possible build/skill with Hunter:

Must Have:

First Blood – 15% bonus damage, to foes over 80% HP, +3 Dex

Second Wind – Under 50% stamina your stamina regens 50% faster, +3 Dex

Tricks of the Trade – party wide 10% bonus damage and 10% duration bonus, +3 Willpower

Stealth – 50% damage bonus, lasts 30 secs, 24 sec cooldown, 20 stam

Knife in the Shadows – attacks from stealth auto crit, +3 Dex

If you don't have that, play the archer instead.

it allows you to crit any attack while you are stealthed. This is the combo that make the hunter better than the archer in some situation.

Entering Stealth is also a very usefull defensive skill while coming out of it with your special attack will do massive damage.

Work best with:

1-Leaping Shot 600% weapon dmg if all projectile connect, all of them will crit if used from stealth, best used on a large enemy (pride demon, rage demon)

2-Explosive shot 200% weapon dmg in a 4 meter radius to every mob, all of them will crit if used from stealth, best used in combo with static cage, pull of the abyss, stacked mobs.

3-Throwing Blades 400% weapon dmg in 4 hit. All of them will crit if used from stealth, will sunder armor with the skill "cheap shot" for 6 sec.

4-Full draw, will one shot pretty much any mob in the game.

other skill still do the job but are not as strong as these 4 offensives one.

Which one you should take? depend with what class you tend to play.

I usually take stealth + throwing blades, leaping shot and full draw, I full draw a mob at the start of a fight (caster/archer), stealth, go in melee range ( BE AWARE OF ANIMALS) either leaping shot one large mob for 7% of his hp, or throw blades, on 1 or 2 enemies then leaping shot right after to finish it then shoot any other enemies (small one so you can knock them down with upgraded leaping shot)

if playing with no barrier, you may want to take explosive shot as a crowd control ability.

Short answer: Archer

Upgraded Longshot + Any decent Bow = GG

That being said, I've been using the Hunter a lot lately (grinding for that beautiful Banner) and I play only Perilous, not because I am a skilled player or anything, but because everyone I know play Perilous and nothing else (I would like to play more Threatening).

I find Stealth and Leaping Shot pretty much mandatory, the main source of damage at your disposal. It can tear bosses, but for the rest the Hunter is pretty mediocre. I normally take Explosive Shot since it is a starting power and I mess around with the 4th one, still figuring out how to make the best out of this character.

But there is one issue with the Hunter that most people will probably agree with me: you definitely want to have the Longbow of the Griffon. He is at his best at relatively short range, and there is no other Bow suited for this range.

Archer is almost as broken as arcane warrior. Get cooldown whenever teammates crit passive, longshot, leaping shot, and stamina on crit/kill passives. With a decent critting team you will always have either longshot or leaping shot available and have the stamina to always spam them. Your mark of death will almost always be available and with decent crit, mighty tonic, pincushion, and leaping shot nonstop spam while backed up against a wall, you could take down a boss in several seconds. You will surpass every other class except a very well played arcane warrior. Go and be cheese.
