If you could play Mass Effect 3 as any squadmate instead of Shepard, who would choose?

(I think this forum is the best place to put this topic. Apologies if no one else thinks so.)

I do not usually write these types of topics, but I thought this would be a fun little exercise.

So if Shepard was unavailable during Mass Effect 3 -- for example, Shepard died in the Reapers' arrival on Earth -- and you could play Mass Effect 3 as any squadmate, who would you choose? Who would you prefer to take on missions as your two squadmates?

Some rules for this little exercise:

Rule 1: You are restricted to the following 'regularly-available' list of squadmates in ME3: James, Liara, Garrus, EDI, Javik, Tali, Kaiden, and Ashley.

So no David Anderson, Aria, Nyreen, Wrex, or any of the ME2 squadmates available only in the Armax Arsenal Arena.

Both Kaiden and Ashley are available; assume Shepard was able to save them both on Virmire back in Mass Effect 1.

Rule 2: Squadmates are restricted to their current power set. No bonus powers allowed. For example, Javik is restricted to using Dark Channel, Pull, Slam, and Lift Grenades only.

I do not think it needs to be written but I will write it anyway: assume Ashley's Marksman power works properly.

Rule 3: Squadmates are restricted to their current weapon loadout. For example, James must use a shotgun and assault rifle, and Liara must use a pistol and SMG.

Rule 4: Squadmates can get the same cooldowns as Shepard. This rule is an attempt to balance out squadmates with traditionally long power cooldowns (such as EDI) with squadmates that have can have much shorter or non-existant cooldown (such as Liara and James).

Rule 5: Squadmates no longer incur a weapon damage penalty. For those who do not know, squadmates deal only 30% of base weapon damage before any possible weapon damage bonuses are added.

I figure I should answer my own question. While I would eventually like to play as all squadmates, I am partial to tech powers in Mass Effect 3, and would play as EDI first. Between Incinerate, Overload and Defense Matrix, I have everything I need: Tech Bursts, Fire Explosions, and Damage Protection.

I would be a little torn on what pistol to use though. Either the Scorpion for staggers, or the Talon as a shotgun substitute. Executioner would be fun as well. SMGs are sort of an afterthought.

For squadmates, I would take Tali (a very underrated squadmate), and either James or Ashley. Kaiden would be good too I suppose with his Overload and Cryo Blast.

I am thinking I would go as EDI so I could get lots of FEs: Incinerate>Overload. I also like Overload because of neural shock. EDI is more or less an Engineer without Sabotage or Drones. I also have access to the Eagle and Hurricane, so no problem there.

But I think I might also be interested in Ashley. More FEs with Inferno Grenades and Concussive Shot.

Liara is sorta of a cross between the MP Human Adept and Asari Adept, neither of which I was particularly fond of.

While Kaidan's Reave is a good power, the other squad mates don't have the rapid detonator that Shepard does with Throw.

Virmire Survivor, preferably Ashley because of the sniper rifle, higher HP and fire grenades.

Liara & Garrus are my favorite companion characters, but neither one would be in command of the Normandy. As far as the story goes, either one of the Virmire survivors makes the most sense.

I actually think it would be a cool idea if the Virmire Survivor was the protagonist of ME4. When the general's down his lieutenant takes over...

I'd be torn between Liara and Tali really as I find both their sklls useful. Liara as I like the idea of picking people up and throwing them with Biotics and stuff and I've always found that a cool feature about playing as a Adept/Vanguard. Tali obviously because of her hacking and Combat drone as I find that excellent for distracting an enemy often long enough for me to sneak in behind and finish it off.

I would go with Ashley, I can't stay without sniper rifle ... and for squadmates I will pick Tali and Javik

Tali? Underrated? What weird alternate reality have I logged into. Unless something has drastically changed in the Mass effect fandom, in my experience; Tali is overrated. She has always been in the top three most beloved and most used Squadmates.

Anyway, to answer your question, I would love to play as Ashley. Will never, ever happen in any Mass Effect game... But since ME2 there has been alot of untapped charecter development with her. Too bad she was wasted after ME1 due to fan ignorance and developers who didn't care about her *sigh*. As for which squadmates I'd use? I'm old fashioned, so it's straight up big guns and heavy armor. Ashley as PC, with a mixture of James, Garrus, and Javik.

Tali.

Energy Drain to deal with shields, Sabotage to deal with turrets and geth. Defense Drone and shotgun for husks. Combat Drone for distraction. Pistol for long range combat.

Will use James and Garrus as squadmates. James will have Squad Incendiary Ammo with Explosive Burst, Fortification and Arms Master focused on durability and some Frag Grenades. Garrus will have Concussive Shot to detonate tech and fire explosions as well as Proximity Mine for boss debuff. Turian Rebel specced for weapon/sniper damage.

For weapons I'd probably use Geth Plasma Shotgun with Smart Choke and Thermal Clip mods and Suppressor/Predator with Power Magnifier and Heavy Barrel mods.

Gameplay-wise:

Tali is overrated in ME1 (if she was rated at all) and is overshadowed by Garrus and Kaidan; especially Kaidan.

Tali is anti-synthetic in ME2, but not really useful at all against anyone else.

Tai is definitely underrated in ME3, mostly because you get her late and she requires more micro-managing to get the most out of her.

Story-wise/character-wise, a lot of people like Tali. Story-wise/character-wise I agree with you: Tali is extremely overrated.

The best way I found a use for Tali in ME3 was to give her a big shotgun.

You won't let me choose Aria T'lok as the hero with squadmate Archangel Garrus, so...

I would have to choose Javik for the hero with the particle rifle from his dlc. Set up his Dark Channel for faster cooldown. Liara would have the Paladin and Hornet or Tempest and use her biotics to combo off of Javik's Dark Channel or set up a combo. Kaiden would also have a particle rifle and use reave to combo off of Liara's spammy singularity.

Javik's gear is all about power damage, so all serrice council armor. Javik's love interest would be Aria T'lok, and by that I mean they are allies with benefits. Javik would take good care of the space hamster. He would certainly not eat it in front of Liara just to comment that they were bigger in his cycle.

So, before Thessia, Javik would meet the Illusive Man under the guise of teamwork, and then the joke would be on Illusive Man for believing anything. And then he would send a case of assorted flies to the Dalitras.

Normally I'm Infiltrator Sniper Shep.

So naturally I'd be Garrus.

Garrus, I guess. But only if he stayed on Palaven. Maybe a lot of evac missions with Krogan and jack's kids, but also personally rescuing his family (or failing).

Kaidan, because Reave, Cryo Blast and Overload.

My most used squadmates would probably be EDI and Liara, depending on the mission.

I'd love be able to play as a character exactly like Tali so I'd definitely go with being able too play as her.

Javik, hands down winner. Sooo bada$$ :) "hmm ... actually it was a delicacy in my cycle" "they used to eat flies" 'the enemy is persistent" " Skilled in only one art ... killing" and my favourite "This I can do".

In my minds eye, if Javik were humanoid they'd use Christopher Judge as the body/face model (Teal'c from Stargate) and be just as bada$$
