So i guess the question can be phrased into

Why type and who?

As in a Demon, Archdemon, Darkspawns, Elven Gods, or Human/Elven/Dwarf/Qunari

Personally, I would like if we can get the Old Gods, not Archdemon, but the Old Gods before they are transformed into the Archdemon. It would really shed light into a lot of the Lore as to what happened with the 7 Magisters, the Taint, the Black City, and so much other stuff.

BUT what I would really like is to see a Villain that was once an Ally or a Playable character. So for example

The Warden; Maybe the Taint has finally affected him to the point that he cannot remember who he was but has absolved him of his ability to be the man he once was. It would be nice to see this because you get to see what time did to a man who was not only a hero to the people, but a character you yourself controlled. It would bring some pretty big angry out of me if I had to kill him/her at the end.

Hawke/Cloude/Alister/Loghain for example would be possessed by the Fear Demon that was encountered in Inquisition.

One that is sympathetic, conflicted, intelligent and rational, one who's perspective I can relate to even if I don't agree with it. No more "bwaaaa!!! I'm crazy because reasons and everyone must die!" or generic, mindless or stupid evil who's only goal is more power and destruction and to kill everyone.

A villain that feels a bit more like a rival to the protagonist

I wouldn't mind having another loghain. A villain that can be praised or persecuted for their actions. Solas looks like he may walk that path in the future.

I don't feel like dumat is dead. I feel like he'd be a compelling villain. He still has a presence

This. A villain that is rational, believable, and whose motives are comprehensible and logical would be ideal. The best villains are the ones that, if you turn your head and squint, you can almost empathise with; the ones with the noblest of intentions whose ultimate path leads them to disastrous results. Villains that are "insane" or just evil because reasons are pretty uninteresting (Archdaemon), whereas a villain that displays real human motivations, flaws, and feelings (Loghain), allows you to look at them and say, "There but for the grace of God go I".

I want to be the villain.

Seriously, let the PC be the villain for a change. Managing one's evil organization and their public relations activities will provide plenty of challenges in addition to the overarching "good-guys" trying to stop you.

Probably someone like Vivienne. A villain with intelligence, confidence and has conviction in their beliefs.

(I love Vivienne <3 so the emphasis is on the 'someone like')

Edit: Also they would be a Knight Enchanter to add to the difficulty :)

Good a true villain with motivations that's available to all players instead those who took a certain route not some mindless force or grey anti-villain.

Even Sauron had motivations on why he became the dark lord and a driving force behind what he did and while Corypheus had motivations driven by his lost of faith as well as a view that the world was twisted and not what it should be and that it deserved a god that would answer the people's prayers instead of the silence of the maker you didn't get to explore them at all if you sided with the mages beyond his boasts.

Or alternatively fighting off a invasion of qunari would be fine too.

A vilain that I can hate and chase all the way to the ending where I can smash him to bit . Like irenicus from BG2 .

A vilain that isnt being influenced by a 3rd party , because thats Lame . either ya are a vilain or a sidekick . Ya cant be both .

A vilain that doesnt change his tune from 'Muahahaha I will kill everyone and everything' to 'OHhh that hurt , X help meeeeeeee I give ya anything and everything ' . if ya cant stand the job..dont apply for it .

Kotor 2 had great Vilains , Nihilus , Sion and the 3rd unmaed ones . Now thats a vilain worth fighting in the end .

Yourself, manifested from the fade somehow. A twisted version of you. Which you wouldn't learn initially, but you -might- come to realize over the course of the game. Or there could be scenarios where you'd have to deal with the infamy your other self is sowing all around.

And another thing, please... no more amnesia at the beginning... :)

I guess the most obvious answer is a good villain. This isn't to give a cheap answer, but I could kind of think of examples of all kinds of villains done well and which I enjoyed. To me the most important qualities in a villain is consistency in actions and sense of presence and threat in the story. Thus, despite Loghain being a favorite of many, for me he was never a great antagonist because I did not feel his actions were not consistent with his role.

Having written that, I do always like a sense of humanity in the antagonists. For example, the big two antagonists in DA2 were Arishok and Meredith. For me, both of them were truly great concepts, had a constant presence in the story and were not only consistent in their actions, but also were acting from places that felt deeply understandable and human. Even Meredith, who was vastly underdeveloped due to the rushing of act 3, was built during the previous acts as her hold and presence in the city was unquestionable. It also led to a sense of escalation, which fit with the character we finally met and what drove her.

I think a character like Vivienne would be an excellent villain. Someone who's all smiles and regal, and is secretly plotting to have people's families killed because they're in her way of her bigger picture.

I want to be the villain.

But then who or what would be the antagonist if you don't want to play the villain?

This could end up feeling like the Darkspawn Chronicles.

A guy who acts like the first little bit of this video:

The more over the top the better TBH. Corypheus wasted too much time trying to act all regal and ominous. Plus Corypheus is kind of a dumb name.

Some kind of demon that crosses over from the fade would be best probably. Like a spirit of mischief that gets twisted out of proportion (thinks a village exploding is a funny prank).

She was awesome. I actually earned her respect, she told my PC he was a true Lord of the Sith. Made me feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside.

I'd love a demon villain if it was done properly i.e. not being stupid evil like the demons in DAI. I have faith that it's possible after how well Cole was handled.

So, basically, not really a villain? What exactly goal would this person have and why would you be opposing them?

This plot basically reduces to one thing; invasion by a foreign military power. Assuming you're not a racist, the most you can do with this is have a political ideology that somehow excludes the protagonist in particular or requires the protagonist to die.

I personally do not want to sympathize with the villain. What I want is a villain with more grounded motivations, but who is a person I can consider to be vile and worthy of getting a dagger or arrow between the eyes. This person doesn't have to be likeable, but can be charismatic and is convincing as a figure of authority that many others could consider being advantageous to ally with. That doesn't mean that this person has to be a one-note cliche that's cackling evil, but someone that I can thoroughly hate, and even complex characters that can express the full spectrum of emotions that anyone else does can be considered to be human garbage. I don't want a Loghain in the least. What I want is a Howe with a greater level of authority.
