So, basically, not really a villain? What exactly goal would this person have and why would you be opposing them?

This plot basically reduces to one thing; invasion by a foreign military power. Assuming you're not a racist, the most you can do with this is have a political ideology that somehow excludes the protagonist in particular or requires the protagonist to die.

Many might consider Lucifer a sympathetic

I wouldn't mind having another loghain.

^No

I really don't get why people liked him, he seemed borderline incompetent and was literally no threat to Warden whatsoever. Outside the Landsmeet this guy was practically a toothless dragon

If anything Rendon Howe was way more threatening especially if you played a Human noble, that guy went to whatever lengths it took

Many might consider Lucifer a sympathetic

But that only tends to work b/c God is portrayed as an unsympathetic jerkass at best, and the portrayal of Lucifer gets stuck at the noble rebellion part.

Yeah. You clearly knew what this guy wanted in the end, but he seemed like a real person with a real goal that could very well have worked well for not just him but a lot of other people. But it didn't matter how many other people had reasons to be loyal to him, because I wanted the Warden to tear his throat out.

I want a villain who plays me like a fiddle. Three spring to mind:

SHODAN, specifically her System Shock 2 incarnation.

Master Li from Jade Empire.

Kreia from KotOR2.

Let's throw in a fourth for sheer sneaky-bastardry:

Kefka from Final Fantasy 6.

I want this series to have a villain on that level. Loghain was a misguided zealot, the Archdemon was a faceless, motiveless non-character, Meredith was bats*** crazy (and not even a threat to Hawke until the final quest), the Arishok was just the immovable object to your irresistable force, and Corypheus (while entertainingly hammy and adequately deep-voiced) was something of a non-threat as soon as I had a frigging castle to keep me safe. Give me somebody with pathos and guile who is capable of eliciting both of the following reactions simultaneously:

1: "Oh s***."

2: "...well played, sir."

...and make them fully capable of kicking my behind up between my eardrums any time they think I'm getting uppity. In fact, let them do so. Repeatedly. So that when I finally defeat them, it feels like I really overcame something. Make them able to turn my allies against me. Make them smart enough not to tell me their whole plan before they've allowed me to help them accomplish it. Better yet, make me think they're helping me and then have them turn my allies against me and kick my behind up between my eardrums. Make the secondary villain such a major threat that I ignore the real danger until they have me right where they want me.

Chessmasters make the best villains. Full stop.

I want a villain who is so completely and utterly devoted to whatever organization she belongs to that all that matters to her is building its power, in the name of  progress. And I want that organization to be the chantry...

Personally, I think it'd be cool if whoever the Inquisitor supports for divine gets killed or taken by a group of mages/templars/wardens/whoever so someone young and unknown takes her place and immediately starts forcing everyone to her will. Those who belong to the chantry support her because all she cares about is returning the chantry to its former glory, but others quickly begin to see that she's trouble. She uses blackmail to control any who oppose her, bullies kings and queens to do what she wants, and rumors start spreading about how she constantly breaks rules/traditions/laws while condemning and harshly punishing anyone who does the same. Those who benefit from her machinations (read: the chantry) credit her with brilliance and support her (it's either that or admit they're idiots for not ousting her when she first started bullying and manipulating them to give her more and more control over everything), but others begin grumbling about her abuse of power. That's when the PC gets involved and learns more, then gets stuck trying to take down an organization that is uber powerful because the only way to get rid of the villain is to destroy her organization and strip her of every ounce of power right before you plunge a dagger between her eyes.

But his goal is idiotic and self-defeating, and he pursues it by following the "Idiot's Guide to Failing at That Thing You Really Want" the whole game. Like, he picks the series of steps most likely to result in open rebellion.

I enjoyed what they did in Origins personally, with one villain who is chaotically evil (Archdemon) and another who is more morally questionable than truly evil (Loghain)

I also didn't mind what they did in DA2. The Arishok and Meredith weren't necessarily wrong, they had reasons for what they were doing and Meredith truly thought she was doing what was best to protect her city. Plus, one could say Anders is the true villain of DA2, and he was a party member. Kind've a nice twist.

Please no more mwuahahaha seeking more power just because villains. Honestly, I was just waiting for Cory to cackle maniacally and twirl his mustache throughout Inquisition.

I'd really just like another morally questionable villain like Loghain or Meredith. I really hope that if the next game is in Tevinter, we don't just get a non-darkspawn version of Cory.

Solas. I think now that he has 2-3 powerful God-souls in him he would be exceedingly powerful and his aim could be bringing back Elvhen dominance.

Probably someone like Vivienne. A villain with intelligence, confidence and has conviction in their beliefs.

(I love Vivienne <3 so the emphasis is on the 'someone like')

Edit: Also they would be a Knight Enchanter to add to the difficulty :)

You mean that they will be unwinnable.

A close friend of the protagonist. Or someone like Saren, Sephiroth, and Loghain. An antagonist that believes he's doing what the people need instead of what they want. He/She feels that they have the power and right influences to craft a better world for the people, but knows that there isn't always a good way to go about his/her goal.

So a villain has to be a mindless, one dimensional monster bent on destruction? Yes, I'm sure the only way an antagonist could possibly be sane, rational, and sympathetic is to have them lead an invading army. There could be no other possible scenario or story. We must have more Merediths hopped up on red lyrium, more Orsino's using blood magic and turning into harvesters because reasons, more typical "ancient evil which has been awakened and just wants to mindlessly destroy the land" entities, because those things were just so interesting the first 400 million times.

I'd really like to see an inner-conflicted villain, one doing it for the right reasons, specifically this guy:

Spoiler

I think that's the way the game should point. I think that given the events of DAI, your next incarnation is slotted for having Urthemiel's soul.

The devs are tired of Southern Thedas, so I won't be surprised if it takes place in Tevinter or Qun territory, or somewhere else entirely. Maybe the Anderfels, as events seem to point North or West.

I have a theory that has only been bolstered by DAI that the Elven Gods and the Old Gods are one and the same. More spoilers abound:

There are seven Old Gods, and Nine elven Gods. Solas states in random dialogue that he thinks both the Elven Gods and Old Gods truly existed, but were not divine. He of course, knows this to be true because he is one of those Elven Gods. We also know that the Elven Gods were warring with one another, enslaving their worshippers and conscripting them to fight, and that was the true cause of their collapse. We all know from Corypheus, Flemeth, etc. that powerful mages can put part of the spirits in other things/beings.

Perhaps instead of picking sides like all the other gods, the Trickster with his love of rebellion and hatred for slavery turned all of the Elven Gods into the Dragons that Tevinter worships, sealing most of their potency away beyond the Fade. This would explain Cole's cryptic "they're still trapped behind the mirrors" remark to Solas.  Solas and Mythal were not trapped, so that explains the 7 Old Gods. The Old Gods then taught humans magic, as in Tevinter lore. It could also explain why Solas hates Grey Wardens -- they are killing his family, the Old Gods, and he also does not believe killing all of the Arch Demons will end the Blight. From his random talks with Blackwall, he seems to think the Blights will go on or get worse if the Old Gods are slain.

My big question is what spurred Corypheus into the Fade in the first place, and what really caused the blight? Solas seems to be surprised the Blight exists. It's unclear, but I speculate that Solas may have given Corypheus his elven orb way back before the First Blight, trying to bring the Elven Gods back to save his People, perhaps before falling asleep for centuries. This could have allowed the first humans into the Fade in the flesh. I mean, how did Corypheus get in the Fade in the first place?

I actually like Corypheus more than Lohgain or the Archdemon

For one he was for the most part successful. He led every power player is Southern Thedas to self-destruct on themselves. After Inquisition the mages, templars, and wardens have a permanent big scar on their respective history thank to Corypheus especially the Grey Wardens who nearly bought about armageddon and everyone in Orlais and Ferelden know it based on ambient dialogue from npcs

Literally if not for the Inquisition with the power and influence it held NO ONE could have stopped him. The Warden would have been a drooling mess thanks to his taint manipulation, Hawke would maybe pose a threat if he could get pass the Venatori and Red Templars but no one wants to see this because they couldn't sympathize with him?

I'll never understand the hate for Corypheus. He still league better the guy the came before who either manipulated (Meredith), shortsighted (Orsino, Arishok) , full on incompetent (Loghain),or otherwise non-factor until endgame (Archdemon)

I don't mind any of the previous antagonists, I just wish they were better written. I liked Arishok the most.

*sigh* People undermining Corypheus yet again.

Corypeus had great potential that got wasted, so many just don't see that he wasn't just evil.

As far as tropes go I would like to see a Hero Antagonist, an Anti-Villain, Solas could fit this role nicely.  Other types would be a Friendly Enemy. It would be nice to play a Hero that would doubt if their cause is just, or a Hero who understands and even agree with the antagonist and yet has  to prevail.

Hmmm... someone new. Perhaps a villain who is just as human or whatever race you choose to be, maybe someone you knew or know. Not like Solas or Anders since you meet them, but a real solid rival that connects to your character's past and maybe even your choices led them to this dark path.

I've already said this before in one way or another somewhere else, but basically one that it isn't clear they're a villain, or necessarily not a villain, basically, I would like to be as confused as possible.

I really don't care that much about "writing quality," or the color of their hair, just that, confusing.

Edit: Moved some to a different post.

I admit Anders was more shocking to me than Solas, so I was left rather confused, especially when Anders personal quest resulted in my help in destroying the Chantry, but I agree. I'd love to really feel betrayed or confused. Someone that can fool us all, until we discover their secret agenda.
