@Ukki:
You do know that your statement sounds like typical Imperial propaganda... Why would that be? Oh yes, because it *is* typical Imperial propaganda.

Well *clears throat*, it's every Magisters duty to defend the Imperium against slander and outright lies.

*lifts a crystal wine glass for the slave to fill it*

What propaganda? Every true magister sees him/herself as eventually worthy of being on top, instituting a blight-crazed history relic as monarch would never be among Tevinter's interests.

Backing Corypheus was merely an elaborate prank pulled on the south and nothing more.

I promise.

It's obvious I am totally unbiased in this issue.

Totally.

I am quite aware :P

This was, naturally, more about potential - or wishful thinking, if you want - than reality. However, I do get the impression that time is running out for the Imperium, that some things must change or they'll lose the war against the qunari. The magisters care more about their internal rivalries than about winning the war and doing something for their empire, and in addition, Tevinter needs allies, and for that it needs to be someone wanted as an ally. People like Calpernia and Dorian are needed, and Calpernia comes across to me as the better leader. She has the commanding presence and the determination Dorian lacks, for all his extraordinary abilities and good intentions.

Dorian doesn't seem like he really wants to become Archon. He wants to make the Imperium a better place, but he doesn't have a concrete plan. He has a bit of Carver to him, he has the potential for greatness but he hasn't found the right opportunity yet.

Calpernia has the ambition to lead Tevinter and she could do it, but being an ex-slave with an army of former cultists won't go to far with the Senate. Dorian has the experience with the upper classes and the support of other progressive Magisters like Maevrais. They could work together.

The only propaganda around is by those Southerners. Trite propaganda, set to undermine Tevinter, I say.

Quite. You'll note that it was only outcasts and fools who supported Corypheus. There were three magisters involved -- one a tortured prisoner, the other blackmailed, and the last was the magister of Vyrantium. That is, he was a magister because he led a circle and not because he was one of the Altus families.

Blood will always tell, and his was clearly Laetan. Treachery and grasping was to be expected.

From what I recall of what Dorian says, Tevinter politics are really pretty much the same as those of Orlais, except they use spells instead of knives.   The upper echelons, the Altus families, won't relinquish their power without a fight and they would instantly close ranks if they thought some upstart was going to upset their nice cosy set up.    The only thing that might prevent her being totally dismissed (or killed) is her desire to be a beacon of hope against the savage Qunari.    So I imagine her being posted up to Seheron.

It is interesting to note, though, that whilst they instantly distance themselves from Alexius in a mage play through, I don't recall any such action on the part of the Magisters in a Templar one.   So may be Calpurnia has got the backing of some leading members of the Magisterium.

So how "canon" is the multiplayer? Both Samson and Calpernia appear in it.

I've just spent 20 minutes on net research and came up with nothing. This is annoying. She's probably subsumed under "additional voices".

Calpernia was voiced by Alexia Healy. :)

Not really them, just their model as a separate person

Well aside from the propaganda that the magisters didn't start the blight and that they conquered the elves. In actuality apparently they did start the blight and they just scavenged the leftovers of the elves. ;)

Actually, existing clues would more support the idea that Livius is an Altus, not Laetan. The leader of a Circle would be the First Enchanter, but this position renders one ineligible for the rank of Magister. In this context, "Of Vyrantium" is most likely referring to his family's base of power. If he were a representative of Vyrantrium's Circle, it would have been included in his title. Of course, there's also the surname Erimond, as well as the prominent heraldic badge displayed on his outfit. Surely, he is the spawn of an Altus line.

You gotta wonder...how long is Calpernia's hair? I mean hot damn, it looks like she put it into a plait then a bun. Two of them.

Tevinter is doing just fine without Calpernia. She is the "Last Hope of Nothing". Seems some people want to change Tevinter to stroke their own egos.

It's the same hairstyle Anora uses. Should look rather impressive if she lets it down. Totally impractical though, it would be limited to ceremonial occasions.

@Bruce Wayne:

Yes, I would like to see Tevinter changed because I appreciate the culture minus the slavery and the human sacrifice. Whether I do it or someone else actually doesn't matter - should some Bioware writer decide to turn the story into a book that would be perfectly fine - though being involved in it would make for a story suitable for a game.

@Jo Berry:

Thanks for the info. Updated the OP.

That would be terrible. You'd be removing what essentially makes Tevinter Tevinter because it bothers your real life ideology. I think Dragon Age as an IP is becoming too safe. Using Tevinter as the back drop of some flat footed homily would be the final straw to break the camel's back. I don't want to end slavery indentured or otherwise. I don't want to end the blood rituals. I don't even want to try. Maybe I want to revel in these things. Or maybe I just don't care about them and want to crush the Qunari or conquer the rest of Thedas. Slavery and ritualistic sacrifice are symptoms of Tevinter's imperfect culture. I want to experience them not be the plucky hero that ends 2,000 years of cultural conditioning so that my ego gets stroked.

I appreciate realism, so I actually agree that "poof, it's changed" would be terrible. Beyond that, indeed, it has always "bothered" me that the role of the Evil Empire in this setting went to a culture that would be my favorite without the human sacrifice (I might even live with some variant of slavery, since Orlais is only marginally better). No culture of Thedas is perfect and I wouldn't want any one to be perfect, but I would prefer an acceptable level of evil so that Tevinter doesn't stand out any longer as the Evil Empire of the setting.

So... it isn't culture until someone gets sacrificed?

Orlais is as evil empire as Tevinter is (if there can be such), just with phony accents and ridiculous costumes.

But I do applaud your attitude milady. At least you are giving the Imperium a change to prove itself. *bows*

Some people appear to think so. I'm more inclined to follow Dorian's explanation of why he cares about his homeland, and Calpernia's vision of what it could be.

Pictures of Calpernia? Pictures of Calpernia.

Not by me, no. Credit goes to ultra-trashcannon. I like them both, and the second one looks like Samsy said something cheeky, pissing her off? :P

That aside, when you're at the Well of Sorrows and confront Calpernia and reveal to her

Spoiler

the gap in the front teeth wont help her cause in the senate either....  just saying, thats the one thing that really bugged me about her character (michael strahan is enough, we dont need anymore)

Nice pictures, but who names himself "ultra-trashcannon", LOL? As for the words, I'll try to find some more references. It would be nice to have a complete translation.

@all:

Here's another fantastic picture by GerryArthur, whose other work is also worth checking out.

Yeah, I found it on Tumblr since I recently found it has some nice Calpernia pics I couldn't find on deviantArt. But me having never really set foot on that site, I'm now not even sure if that's their name or the title of their blog or...whatever. :P

That's also a nice picture. Just noticed the snakes too. Symbolism for...slavery? Though the slavery snake could just be in one other fanart tarot card that I'm applying here.

I've never heard of snakes associated with slavery. There are many different uses in various myths, but never that.

Serpents are often used in artistic depictions of Tevinter mages. I'm not sure if it's even supposed to be a negative connotation, because they appear alongside both Dorian and Archon Hessarian.
