So who decided it looked ok to put a flesh colored skull cap under hats?

Really, there is not a lot of choice in the matter.   You couldn't have the hat model sitting on the hair model without major clipping issues.    Which means you would have to make a completely separate model for the hat combined with each of the possible hairstyles.   So that one hat would  have to have like 15 different models.    That's just a waste of limited resources then.

Especially since I would guess a large number (if not the majority) of players turn on the helmet hide option anyway.

Someone had to take thevtime to design/implementvthat hat in the first place. Why not take the time to do it right.

Limited resources? No! This is a AAA game, backed by the largest publisher in gaming history! This is no excuse.. They made it, they 'should' have made it right! Its thoughts like this, that allowed the game to be rushed to INcompletion... So much of it was clearly done to a bare minimum! Stop defending this practicr, or it will conitue, and worsen...

Nasty clippings indeed.

There aren't a lot of options considering all of the different hairstyles. You'd probably have some nasty clipping if you didn't use the skull cap solution.

See, I would somewhat accept this explanation if the game didn't have *insanely* bad clipping everywhere else.  I thought about just starting a screenshot collection of such things as: Roderick's arm clipping through Cole's hat brim, my hands clipping through my thighs when I sit on a bench, my hair clipping through the back of my collar, Varric's feet clipping through the floor, etc. etc. and then opening a thread that was basically "so Bioware, you are worried about my hat clipping so you give me a hideous skullcap, but *not* about clipping in 1400 other places?"  Just remove the hideous skullcaps.  It's a video game.  Clipping happens.

I understand the problem with configurable hair and headgear, but I wonder: 3D games have existed for more than 20 years, and in all that time nobody has come up with a workable solution? I have a hard time believing that.

There certainly is choice. Just add a default tucked hair color. Boom. It's done. Yes, it would look cool if the hair was the same style as the kind you chose, but adding a default tucked hair w/ matching color is a compromise I think many could live with. Yes, this is more work, maybe more than it's worth and that's why we didn't get it. I would have certainly given up shard collecting for this option, but that's just me.

Its got a Skull cap for cryin out loud.. It completely covers the hair regen.. Just have the head bald when wearin certain hats! Like in many other games..

Any game with THIS size budget, and developmental cycle, should have FAAAAR more polish.. This is just pathetic!

You kinda have to laugh, though. We can't have long hair because it clips. Meanwhile, you have to drag the forehead slider all the way in so it doesn't clip with bangs, and the neck clips with the jammies (with as much as we're wearing jammies, you'd think they'd get that right), the hats clip, the helmets clip, beards clip, armor clips, weapons clip.

If it were up to me, I'd just slap a warning label on the box: "Clipping happens. Get over it." Then we could have nice things.

All hats/helms look ridiculous to me, so I always have them not appearing

though the Inquisitor helm looks awesome. I wish we could decide which character we can have showing their head gear

That's a skullcap? I thought it was coloring char's hair white this whole time. I was also wondering why putting the hat on bald vivienne suddenly gave her what appeared to be blindingly white hair. :P

Well, there are ways of dealing with it, but they generally require a few compromises and take more resources. And most people probably just hide the helmets anyway, so how many resources is it worth spending?

The normal solution seems to be to have versions of the hat for bald, short and long hair, and just give the player whatever of those variants fits best.

There aren't a lot of options considering all of the different hairstyles. You'd probably have some nasty clipping if you didn't use the skull cap solution.

DS2 has multiple hairstyles and managed to do it helmets with very little clipping (including open helmets and hats) so it possible. It would take more work though. You wouldn't be able to just stick a hat on top of every hairstyle. Some would need sightly different models when using them.

Plenty of other games manage this just fine.

Like which ones? Where have you seen a non-preset(!) character which can wear custom helmet\hat slot that does not entirely cover\replace the hair?

Preferably in FB.

there is a solution, a simple one. A preset hero with no CC, Or a budget to make a unique hair+hat model for EACH possible hat combined with EACH possible hairstyle, which would make 100 unique models, assuming we only have 10 hairstyles + 10 hats all over the game.

While I realize that there are differences between brushed and moulded hair in games, it doesn't change the fact that the new Sims 4 does allow for hair to show on all hats. Each hairstyle has two versions: hatted and unhatted. Literally any hairstyle can be used with any hat and there is minimal to no clipping...

Also, again.... it doesn't even look like they tried to minimize clipping in this game... I mean my body clips with my pyjamas. Considering I must have a body and I must have pyjamas, thereby making this combination impossible to avoid, you think they would have been sure they didn't clip with themselves. AND HAT/HEAD CLIPPING ALREADY EXISTS. Because major NPCs hair is so attached to their mesh, it can show through the skullcap (they sometime's don't go bald), and they can clip through the hat proper. Don't believe me? Put the Inquisitor's hat on Blackwall, his forehead clips right through, and so does his hair.

You don`t even need a single model for every hair option. You could do some limited smart options, like one for short, medium and long hair with maybe some variants on braids, volume, etc...

This was just lazy and bad design. Not fot helmets, but for hair generally

I`m honestly glad we have full helmets. It annoys the hell out of me that every ****** piece of cloth and leaves out there are blown by the wind while the longest hair there is completely static

Seriously?   Defending lazness, and metiocrate...Sigh

Anyway. Off the top of my head. Dragons Dogma, Skyrim, Fallout, Souls' series, and many, many more!  This game had a huge backing. Tere is no excuse for how much of the obvious corner cutting we see!

And no, you dont design for every possibility. You design a few standard , then hav hair default to a bald or combd/pulled back style! You dont wear a hat, or helmet and exect your dew to remain.. You ponytail, or endup with hathair!

Sight.... Why can't Bioware just fire their designing staffs, and start hiring mod designers from Nexus? If it wasn't for the mod designers there Skyrim would be one of the worst and boring games to play. Mod designers is what saved the game.

It's a shame that EA/Bioware refuse to design DA: I into a mod friendly game. You know it would of saved them a lot of headaches had they done it.

They can't do hats with hair.

I don't buy that, it's EA and other EA games have hats that leave the hair alone.

Yep Sims 4 lets you add hats and beanies to any hairstyle!

Oh yeah, forgot about Dragon's Dogma! I love the way circlets fit around different styles of hair. They really knocked it out of the park with CC and gear in that game.

I swear this is a horrible design choice. The Inquisitor hat would be epic. If I was not wearing a swimming cap under it...

Probably the same guy who decided the elven male shoulder & arms look okay. <_<

That´s not an option. Mod designers work in their freetime, don´t have budgets or schedules.

They are free to design the thousandth hair colour as long as they please and no one will complain why it takes so long.

If their mod doesn´t work out they simply don´t publish it.

Sims 4 does it by deleting parts of the hair where it would be clipping with the hat. It honestly is an easy fix that a noob level mesher can fix but they don't bother with it for it some reason. I don't buy it being resources.
