Mass Effect 1.

To me it was the overall best game.

I liked the exploration, the story, the atmosphere, the lore, the characters and the setting.

The other two just don't compare really.

Not that I think the other two are bad games. They're good in their own right.

Mass Effect 1. It had the best story, the best characters, and the most player freedom. ME2 and ME3 are poorly written, COD wannabes. The best things about ME2 are the extensive character development for the squad, the revamped combat, and the suicide mission. ME3 had the returning ME1 cast and the fact that it's the end of the Trilogy; mostly everthing else is mediocre.

ME2 for overall experience, ME3 for improved combat, ME1 for nostalgia, Windows Solitaire for in between games.

Mass Effect 2 for me. Combat i enjoyed, a real focus on choice, interesting roster, interesting story, great ending.

Hmm personally...

Me1 is the best regarding story and getting us acquainted with the awesome mass effect universe. Lacks in gameplay and cluttered interface and items and not quite as many characters, that we don't get to know as much.

Me2 is the best regarding a diverse range of characters and their interactions and it had some pretty great moments, epic even? But it simplified items and weapons too much and though gameplay was more streamlined it was still quite a bit clunky. The main story was quite a bit meh and the terreapertinator was well ...lol...

Me3 is the best regarding gameplay. Combat is rather smoothe, fluent and fun. It lacks somewhat in range of characters, but it does give you a decent amount of quality time with those you have. It does have it's great moments, epic even, but story wise it's not as true to the previous games as it should have been. I like the range of items and weapons.... but dat ending... and certain other "continuity"... decisions detract.

Overall, if I had to put numbers on it... Where 0 is abysmal... 10 is perfect.

Me2 9.5

Me3 9.3

Me1 9.0

Yes, I enjoyed them all that much ... and nothing is perfect. :)

When I truly think about it...my answer is probably Mass Effect 2. You are done with the alliance, lovable characters, multiple crew members to fight with, recruiting missions are all different, and same with loyalty. It's great how you have to do loyalty missions to make sure a person can survive a task for you in the final mission...but I don't understand how finding Morinth will make Samara a better Biotic, destroying the Heretic Geth make Legion a better engineer, or watching Tali get exiled (or not) make her a better engineer. I understand how Garrus finding Sidonis can make him a better leader, same with Jacob to his Dad, and Grunt doing the passage making him a stronger fighter.
This game is also where Love is something you can find easily, I had three girls thrown at me! Jack, Tali, and Miranda all wanted to spend a night in the captain's quarters, and though I'd glady take them all they wanted privacy.
So ME2 is my favorite due to all the fun things to do and related to the relatively short encounters with collectors. I mean you go to a sacked colony, find recruits, go to another colony, find recruits, find a device that allows you to find collectors, find collectors, kill, profit.

ME 2, one of the best games I have ever played with the most epic end mission ever

ME1 didn't get that good until virmire
feros and noveria were pretty boring and the voice acting in some parts bad (Shep also said the same thing no matter which dialogue option you chose)
I also hated the mako and those huge lifeless areas
the side missions reused enviroments all the time (poor DA2 gets burned for it but no not ME1)
etc.

ME 3 on the other hand went to extreme too movie like
with so much autodialogue my Shep wasn't the same anymore
the beginning and ending sucked, except Garrus, Tali and Javik the squad was boring
where is the airlock when you need it?( for sexbot, James and in-your- face Liara)

I also hated the alliance and hackett but my shep was suddenly a hurahhh military guy so he didn't care

ME 2 had the best squadmates, the best atmosphere
a great and balanced dialogue wheel, choices mattered ( SM), the beginning was awesome etc.
so yeah ME2 wins hands down

ME1: 11/10

+ best cinematic cut scenes... (not the dialog cut scenes)

+ best story...

+ loved Mako despite clunky controls,

+ exploration sections

+ epic sentimental value... all arguments to the contrary will just bounce of the sentimental shield

+ music

+ vigil

+ thorian

+ the sovereign

- exploration sections with reused environments

- shooter controls rather vague, but acceptable

ME2: 10/10

+ all around greatness

+ best DLC across all DLC every released to date by any company in existence

+ best mix of characters

+ great standalone stories,

+ upgrades to gameplay

+ epic music

+ stylish designs

+ suicide mission is the ultimate epic'ness

+ the shadowbroker

- downgrade from multiarea-open-world shooter to corridor shooter

- where are the guys from ME1?!?

ME3: 8.5/10

+ great game, almost masterpiece...

+ small improvements on the gameplay front,

+ social Citadel DLC

+ music

+ DLC generally positive, but overshadowed by the ending rage

+ the leviathan

- the antagonist in the Citadel DLC

- the need for the extended ending DLC, which still is deeply flawed but an improvement

- weaker immersion due to streamlining of decisions

- improvements too small to outweigh the butchering of story (for example the rachni story arch)

- side quests even more streamlined

- space kid

- characters from ME2 underused due to suicide mission...

- not enough dialog with crew members from ME1, especially after the Citadel fight with Cerberus

- even after delay, still seemed like should have been released one year later (not because of bugs, but because of missing story elements)

- not enough hub worlds (Omega should be in there day1, but as hub after freeing it, not an even narrower corridor shooter DLC)

- choose your color rainbow endings

- for an almost masterpiece... it still is the biggest disappointment since The Phantom Menace and the Matrix Sequels

ME 3 is my favorite but in all honesty I believe ME 2 is the best of the trilogy it especially measures up well as a stand alone game.  In fact out of the three games I am hoping ME next takes after ME 2 the most.

Mass Effect 1 is still my favorite. There's a sense of exploration in Mass Effect 1 that isn't quite there in the sequels (the Mako was far from perfect of course). ME1 also did a great job at introducing this wonderful universe, it truly felt like a huge living universe populated by various races and cultures. ME2 and ME3 didn't really re-capture that magic, imo.

LotSB was my favorite mission in the series, but as a whole I didn't feel as invested in Mass Effect 2's story (which was essentially solving your crew's personal problems because the main story about the Collectors was basically non-existent) as I did Mass Effect 1's. ME3 had some great moments and the first half of the game was really good, but it's really from Thessia and onwards that the story begins to fall apart. The character interaction on the other hand was something that steadily improved as the series progressed.

Overall I would say ME2 is the best game. The game is the most variable, because there are a lot of choices and missions that make a huge difference in this game and also in ME3. Also, the suicide mission was a great final mission with a tremendous soundtrack, where you were rewarded if you were prepared and played the game "well". ME3 is pretty damn close, but I just have to subtract some points because of the ending. It still is a great game, without the subtracted points maybe even better than ME2. But the difference is pretty small anyways. ME1 is a great game, too, but the mechanics don't feel as polished to me; there is a lot of side content, but a great deal of it is repetitive. The story and atmosphere is really great, though, but from a gameplay-point-of-view I just can't rate it as high as ME2 and ME 3.

As has been said before, I think all the games have something unique about them in terms of tone, plot and gameplay, and that's what makes Mass Effect the best game series possibly ever, in my opinion.

ME1 had the best plot and tone, in my opinion. I liked the 70s/80s influence and the mystery and ambiguity of the universe and the reapers was handled excellently. I don't think the gameplay was too bad either, and it had the most satisfying ending of any of the games.

ME2 had a more Bladerunner, decadent/dark tone and I thought that was really interesting, even if I did hate working for Cerberus and the change of tone originally, I came to accept it as an interesting variation. The combat was more fluid and this was possibly the funniest game of them all, even though the ME1 romances were handled poorly (except with LoTSB, mwhaha!)

ME3 had the most cinematic scenes, using props and settings during character interaction. It had some great chances for role play, but on the other hand it also had AutoShep and The Endings. It was also the most emotional, but had the implementation of Player Agency (or lack thereof) was poor.

Just goes to show, nothing is perfect. I enjoy them all, but I just wish someone would BIND THEM ALL TOGETHER INTO AN UNHOLY MASS EFFECT ONE-HUNDRED-AND-THREE

ME 2 beats all.

But ME 3 had the best humor. Especially with Citadel.

Mass Effect 3 for me. The game where everything was put together and we finally fight the Reapers. It felt the most tight, had an amazing soundtrack and had me more invested in the story and characters emotionally. To see the characters interact with each other was really great and many scenes and dialogues were great.

Plus it had Citadel DLC, which was sooo much fun and a bit silly, but lifted my mood enormously after having finished the game the day before where the ending made me so sad, even though I loved it.

ME2 was my favorite.  The graphics took a noticeable upgrade (not too important but nice), and the characters were far more fleshed out (very important).  I liked Tali and Garrus in ME1, but come ME2 they became some of my favorite fictional characters.  Same for the rest of the squad which was all very memorable.  Also, the Suicide Mission.  Still my favorite video game mission all time as it felt like my choices really mattered and had consequences.  On that note, ME2 was really good at giving the illusion that what I did in ME1 mattered.  Sure a lot of the choices had little tangible changes to the story, but from all the dialogue, it sure felt like everything mattered and would continue to matter going into ME3.

I'm just reminded of OP. Yes, ME2 is the best, no question about it. It has the most freedom of choice. Dialogue options actually change what shepard says and a lot of scenes have paragon/renegade outcomes. The freedom of exploration is kind of less and at the same time more than ME1... yeah, I think ME2 is just the best all around.

ME3 is just hard for me to ever call a favorite. I did not expect ME3 to be about war even though ME2 clearly shows the Reapers are arriving at the end. I always knew fighting reapers head-on would be dumb after seeing how much it took to beat Sovereign in ME1 and considering how many there were, I was hoping that ME3 would actually be more about evacuation and scattering thin while discovering a weakness or key to survival. That was honestly what I thought they were gonna go for until they announced ME3 and said "ME3 is full-on galactic war!" as if that would be appealing to me like I was some kind of Michael Bay fanboy. Bleh, I just want to forget ME3 sometimes so I can love ME1 and 2 as much as I did before.

ME1: 8/10

ME2: 10/10

ME3: 6/10

Really, this is just how it feels in my gut.

Mass Effect 2 of course. ME1 has some major flaws, while ME3 lacks the fine qualities that separates a materpiece from great games.

Tastes vary, of course, but I'm always surprised at the love ME2 gets compared to the rest of the series.  For me, ME1 is the best.  I loved the atmosphere, the look, the way it called back to the sci-fi of the late 80's and early 90's.  I loved the film grain.  The music.  The levelling system.  It's like it was tailor-made for me.  Really the only things I didn't like were the horrible inventory interface and the occasional clunky voice-acting.

ME2 was great, but compared to ME1 the look was wrong, the levelling was way oversimplified, the guns weren't moddable, and the atmosphere just didn't feel right.

ME1 > ME3 > ME2

Edit:  I wonder how much people's preferences are based on which one they played first.

ME2 was great, but compared to ME1 the look was wrong, the levelling was way oversimplified

That ME2's leveling system was simpler than ME1's is true, yet it only make it better. In ME1, for the most part, each skill point you used barely changed the power. In a weapon proficiency skill tree for example, you could have one level that gave a 1% damange bonus and the next one would give a 2% damage bonus. So basically what ME2 did was change it so instead of having to spend 10 skills points in a power with each one changing 1% of that power damage, you could have only one that change 10%.

But if there one thing that is clear to me after spending sometime discussing games is that many times feeling alone is more important than the qualitiy of the mechanics of the game. I've seen more than one people here saying how they liked to snipe people in ME1 from a mountain after getting out of the Mako. And there was no solid gameplay mechanic that supported or enhanced it, it was as plain as it could be while still being functional.

So it's no surprise to me that a lot of times when people say ME1 is the best of the trilogy it has to do with either the narrative/characters or the feeling of that game. Because I dare say that if we look at the game mechanics of ME1 we're bound to conclude they are much worse than those of ME2 and ME3. They are serviceable at best.

Well, game mechanics attribute to the feeling of the game you mentioned. ME1 gameplay is simple, sometimes to the point of being boring (Immunity spam on Insanity) but it works. If people enjoyed those mechanics then it means the game did them right. After all, it's all about enjoying the game.

Personally, I prefer ME3 gameplay to ME1 or ME2 for its better variety, synergy between different skills and customization options that can help tailor the character to your liking. ME2 was too limited and ME1 barely had anything in that regard.

I understand the principle behind the levelling changes from ME1 to ME2, wanting to make each level feel noticeably more powerful instead of incrementally; but I'm used to RPG systems with incremental levels, so that kind of slower-paced levelling system doesn't bother me.

In terms of the combat I felt that ME3 did it best, refining and improving on the system introduced in ME2 while giving us back the customizability from ME1.  However combat is not a top priority for me when deciding whether or not I enjoy a game (for example, I hated the combat in DA:O and yet still think it's an excellent game and quite enjoyed playing it), so in the end I still prefer ME1 to ME2 or 3.
