I can't predict Cao Cao's plans often. I guess I'm not that smart.

Operating ON a brain is hard.

I found the title of the thread quite confusing because that's what I originally read it as.

"7 reasons you aren't as smart as you think you are."

-Lists 7 judgemental mistakes (and one superstitious belief) some people might make but not everyone.

I can list one reason that article fails: it generalizes.

The tone of it makes it seem like somebody just wanted to be paid to write a "Why I'm better than everybody else" article on the internet.

Even ignoring that, it's basically just a bunch of generalizations about human behavior that doesn't necessarily make you smarter to be aware of.

I can't help but thing that this article is missing its intended audience. Anyone with "common" sense (really, misnomer of all times), knows the stuff the article briefly tangled with (well, more like superficially pointed at them). And the people that don't have it are either unlikely to read it, or if they do will rather place confidence in the thousands other articles telling them "YOU CAN DO IT! With just a ten bucks investment and this pretty arm ring around your wrist, your success with women will skyrocket! George says: I was always shy and afraid to talk to women. Now I wear this and I swim in ***** ..."

Even ignoring that, it's basically just a bunch of generalizations about human behavior that doesn't necessarily make you smarter to be aware of.

Most of those are the result of social psych research.  And most of the time, knowing about social psych research doesn't make you any better at controlling your reactions.  For example, I know better than to watch sporting events, or poignant human interest news stories at the gym.  My heart's beating all fast and my brain then thinks it's an autonomic nervous system response to emotion.  My brain's dumb.  That doesn't stop me from yelling at the tv when someone makes a stupid play or tearing up over a cat in a tree; therefore, to save myself the embarrassment I just avoid those shows.  You can try to use it to your favor though.  Like, if you want something from your partner have food cooking when you ask.  All those delicious smells make people much more agreeable.

This makes me think of people who watch sad video's online and then try to make you watch them too.

NOPE!

Sorry, but I don't feel like getting all emotional right now!

On the other hand... A smart person will quickly learn that when delicious food is cooking, they are about to be propositioned with something.

I have studied Social Psych, and despite myself I still commit many foolish errors and betray my own code of conduct. Knowledge of the self doesn't make you wiser or immune to mistakes, all it does is help you understand your own nature.

I have to say, I love all the citations for the nebulous "science" in the article. /s

And, ever more I find it amusing when people say that "science" says something, because science doesn't say something. It says everything. Coffee was once bad for you, now it's good. I heard someone on the radio today claiming that "science" said that slow joggers lived longer than fast joggers (or runners), while I distinctly recall hearing years ago that jogging (as opposed to running) was actually bad for your body. The "science" peddled in these kinds of articles is barely science.

Also, is it me or is that article a year and a half old?

Edit: Wow, he's just peddling a book. Nice.

That's the beauty of statistics.  You can make them say just about anything you want.

And that's why I abandoned my psych PhD plans.
