Is there a point to NOT letting companions join?

Most companions (or all of them except the starting 3) give you the option of letting them join you, or rejecting them and they will leave forever...  for those who picked the latter choice, is there any difference to the story or does it just remove all their side quests from the game with zero benefits in return?

As far as I can tell, it pretty much just cuts them out of your game. No real ramifications, unfortunately, although some options are obviously closed to you.

It's sort of nice from a RP perspective. Not all my characters are interested in recruiting a qunari merc, for example.  But it would have been nice had there been actual changes due to their absence.

The benefit is for role-playing your character. The ramification is losing a potential companion. That's all there is to it.

Alternatively, if you dislike a character you can avoid having them tag along to begin with.

Choice :)

I miss the days when companions would join you after trying to murder you.

Nothing happens, you just don't get their content and you miss out on a third Divine choice. Nothing more. Otherwise you can reject all the optional companions.

My Dalish elf was insulted by Sera's "too elfy" comments and told her to hit the road. No pride in her people, no place in her Inquisition. Felt good to cut her loose.

It's just there for people who complained that they didn't want to take certain characters with them in previous Bioware games.

Nothing like a bit of causal racism to start the day.

I guess there must be, the way people complain when they don't have the option.

I take them all in for both security and resources, but stop speaking to a few soon after. Even if one does not like them, keep your enemies closer and all that....

I recruit them all, because I'd rather have certain people inside the tent, peeing out, than outside, peeing in.

Then I ignore them.

nope just there to get rid of characters you don't want to have in your game. That's about it.

In my second game, I didn't recruit one companion, and kicked another out shortly after recruitment. In the end I really regretted missing out on their content... but not enough to backtrack as far as I would've had to in order to get them back. :P

None whatsoever. You simply just screw yourself out of content.

W/o Sera you loose a potential agent, no Viv and she can't become Divine. No Iron Bull and you loose several war table missions (there are some with either Chargers or Qunari.) Dorian, Cole, Blackwall nothing major lost by skipping/refusing them, just personal quests. Haven't figured out how to get rid of Varric or Cassandra yet. Solas, meh, sometimes I make friends with him, other I don't - depends on my Quizzy. (Last one was out to rule the world and pretty much stomped on everyone on the way.)

Yeah but not bringing Sera on feels so good after putting up with her stupid schtick in my first games.

Really listening to her borderline incoherent rant, and her elf comment if you are an elf, and her breeches thing instead of taking armor of weapons and my question WTF kind of leader are you to bring her along?

Aw come on, the breeches thing was hilarious, and selling them probably netted you as much gold as any armor and weapons she might have taken, that you would sell anyway because they don't measure up to the better gear you already have by the time you meet Sera.

I miss the days where you could kill them if they pissed you off enough. There are several DAI companions badly in need of the Murder Knife.

lol!! True, I saw no reason why a competent leader would have her along. The only optional companions I think makes sense to say yes to are:

Blackwall- I don't like him but it makes sense to say yes to a GW's help.

Vivienne- She's not some crazy blood mage and she has court connections

Dorian- Only if you pick the Mage side. I love his entrance if you pick the Temps but I would still think he was some sort of Tevinter plant.

Cole- Only if you pick the Temps. He comes across as so random during his entrance.

Sera is really the only companion I see this option with in dialogue when we talk. I don't see it with Vivienne or Blackwall or Iron Bull except on initial recruitment.

Not sue if my game is trying to tell me something.  At the time I encountered each companion I regret nothing, although there is one companion I'd have reservations about on another play through.

She wants to help. I mean we know she's a party member which makes her special compared to random refugee turned soldier #2345 but in character there's no reason to think she's anything other than another mooks for the Inquisition.

I pick and choose now based on my character. Currently don't have: Blackwall, Dorian, Vivienne, Cole. Next time through I'm skipping Sera, Blackwall, Dorian, Cole, and Iron Bull.

I'm very pleased that you can CHOOSE who to accept. My later playthroughs are much more focused and less comnpletionist and being able to trim the game down for roleplay and logistical reasons is nice. Fully support the right to choose.
