Because I upgraded from a 20g hard drive to a 120g hard drive, I can't continue my Mass Effect 1 character???
My 120g hard drive has no saved characters from Mass Effect 1
My 20g hard drive has all my saved characters from Mass Effect 1

I tranferred all saved files from the old to the new.  Why is this not working?

Does anyone else see a problem with this?  Did Bioware not think this through?  Does someone have a remedy for this?

My old hard drive isn't even big enough to install the 2 ME2 disks to the hard drive!  They had to know this was coming!

I have a somewhat similar issue. I had a 20gb hard drive and I upgraded to a 120gb. All of my Mass Effect 1 data is on the new hard drive including my gamer profile and game saves. Every time I try to use the import utility it crashes and sends me back to the Xbox Dashboard. The game boots up fine, and if I try to start a new game with a new character it will work fine. It only crashes on the Import Utility. The Xbox gives me an error when it returns to the Dashboard reading "The game could not start. Please download the game again." Of course this makes no sense since I didn't "download" Mass Effect 2.

I'm having the same trouble, everything time I try to import either of my old ME1 characters, I get a "A sign-in change occurred. Sign out of your gamer profile to continue." I wonder if it's because I can't get connected to live since I'm in a hotel..

Same here, so how are they going to fix this? Are they even able to fix it.

Why the unholy heck didn't Bioware warn us that only very specific saved careers would work?!? No saves from old Xboxes. No saves where you kept playing, but didn't finish a 2nd career.

Oh, that's right...BECAUSE PEOPLE WOULDN'T HAVE RUSHED TO BUY THE GAME IF THEY KNEW THE #1 HYPED FEATURE WOULDN'T WORK, WOULD THEY?!?!?!?!?

Nice to see that Bioware has thoroughly adopted the EA "screw the paying customer" ethos. Why not sign on with Activision for maximum screwage, guys?!?

If you have the old 20 GB HDD put it back in the machine and start the game. Don't load the game to the HDD just run it . Run the import and hopefully it will find your original (hidden) game files. I started the game and saved the files to my MU and then switched back to my original HDD and it worked!

I have a save file that is a finished game. Are you all getting a message that says "no saved games found" or something like that? I don't get any message. It just freezes after I confirm that I want to use the Import Utility. Then after about a two minutes it kicks me back to the dashboard with an error that reads "The game could not start." I'm just wondering if anybody is having my exact same problem because every other issue on this board seems to be unrelated to the problem I'm having.

I am in the same boat here. I played through Mass Effect 1 with 4 characters and 2 of those multiple times, but stopped playing before fully beating with the 2 play-ons. Even taking that into account I have 2 characters that I have beaten ME1 with and done nothing else with. When I bring up the import utility I get the message of no mission finished saves found. I have not even bothered to play this game yet as I wanted to continue on with one of my ME1 characters and do not want to play through with some default assumed actions from ME1 character.

Is there anything that is being done to fix this issue? I am not going to go buy ME1 again so that I can beat the game again to import.

I have no idea why this worked but...I thought maybe the issue I was having had something to do with the Mass Effect 2 Disc 1 install file on my HDD. I deleted the install and just ran it off the disc. It worked and let me load up my Mass Effect 1 character. Then I played the game for a few minutes, made a save file and reinstalled the disc. So now everything is working just fine.

I have the saved files transferred to my Elite HD from ny old 20 gig system and I cant even get the new game to recognize them. I can load up the first game and play it fine. Just cant load the old profile to the new game. I would try and load it from the old system but I sold it on Craigslist.

Unfortunately due to an issue in the Xbox, when you transfer Hard Drives you loose the ability to select those saves. The easiest solution is to load Mass Effect 2 on the old hard drive (don't install it yet you don't need it) import your character, save after character creation. And copy the save onto your new hard drive.

And what do we do if we transferred the save files over to the new hard drive, and no longer own the old hard drive?

^Can you confirm that this will work if you log into Xbox live? I"m currently in a hotel for the week with my xbox but I can't log into live and i'm having issues with the import utility saying something like "Your sign in has changed blah blah" and asking me to restart. If I sign out, I can upload my data but then it doesn't let me save my game at all

I just got this to work....I had saved right before the last boss of ME1, and beat the game again.....it did a quick "save", or put something on my Hard drive, a file I couldn't seem to access from any menus, and then suddenly I was able to import my data where I couldnt before. If you are in a similar situation, I hope you saved your game right at the end of the ME1! Otherwise you have some backtracking to do.

Kind of a lame roadblock here Bioware......I can appreciate doing something new here, and there being unintended issues, but here's hoping you learn from these little issues, and improve in ME3~!

Screw that. Tell Microsoft to release the device transfer lock-out on those save files. It can be done, and should be done for this instance. But, it would require Bioware management talking to Microsoft's product release team. It helps if you have worked on title releases for the 360 and know what the bureaucracy on these games is. It's Microsoft's DRM and they can release it for Mass Effect 1 through Xbox Live. You heard it here first.

Luckily, I have my old hard drive, and am working through this process (you left out CRUCIAL STEPS), and am crossing my fingers. But the fact that this is necessary is completely ridiculous.
