I really don't get it

ME was always about Shepard and his crew and the threat of the reapers

This isn't DA where every game has a new protagonist or AC with every game in a new time period

I always felt like ME was a one time thing

Apart from that they really rushed ME3 in my opinion and screwed the whole Trilogy as a result

(The terrible Beginning, Priority Earth, Crucible, The terrible ending, the auto dialouge, screwing the ME2 squad as a few popular examples)

And I know many are not satisfied with it so why are even those excited for ME4? Are all the empty promises and failure's just forgotten?

Of course if you liked ME3 then this doesn't apply to you

Imagine if there was only Dragon Age Origins. Why people were excited for Dragon Age 2? It's the same really, a new game in a universe that people like. Like new Star Wars or LotR/Hobbit movie.

Because many people (including me) like the universe and see potential for expansion, and ME3 was a long time ago so yea, the wounds have healed so to speak.

Mass Effect is most certainly not all "about Shepard and his crew and the threat of the Reapers." The ME1-3 are all about those things as the name clearly indicates, but the Mass Effect universe is not restricted to one specific story.

Personally, I wouldn't care as much about MENext if the Mass Effect games didn't satisfy such a specific and mostly unexplored niche, but seeing as there are very few TPS/RPGs with party mechanics and a focus on narrative, I'll remain quite invested this particular series.

I dislike ME3 as much as the next guy, but I see no reason BioWare can't improve their efforts in subsequent iterations, especially now that the narrative isn't stuck with Shepard, the Reapers, and all their baggage. A refresh could breathe some life into the atmospherically broken, but largely mechanically sound ME universe.

I was also excited for DA 2 and then DA:I but in my opinion that was different there is no real continuos storyline in the DA series the games are largely self contained with each game a new protag and a new set of characters

The Hobbit is a prequel trilogy which is connected to LOTR so its existence is justified

ME4 on the other hand won't have anything to do with the original Trilogy and I don't see the appeal the story is done

I view the trilogy as one big game, one story. That story is done, a new one can begin.

Also, there is nothing known about the timeline. It can even be a prequel for all we know (I hope not)

It's rare that writers can create a universe that people will ever read/watch/play again as many times as I have played ME.  The next ME with a brand new protagonist without Shepard?   Yes, please!

In fact, I'd say it's so rare that anytime you can do it, you better write the living **** outta that thing.  'Cause you've just captured lightening in a bottle.

You gotta give it a chance. If it turns out to be a big pile of *hanar mode on* solid waste excretion we can conclude that it was a waste of time. But not before we have seen it...

I dislike ME3 as much as the next guy but that game alone shoudn't end a sci-fi univerise as unique as Star Wars itself. Yes, the ME trilogy was about Shepard and his crew saving the galaxy from the Reapers but does that end all the stories and adventures in this great, vast place? No. I for one hope the best for NME and can't wait to meet the new hero

yeah but I'm still so disappointed with how Bioware "handeled" ME3 the FINAL chapter of the Trilogy that was supposed to wrap up everything nicely and give Shep & Co. the send off they deserved, how they just rushed it (Priority Earth, ending etc.) even though it needed at least another year or even more

that a new game with a new set of characters that is essentially just a spin off doesn't interest me at all

I know it won't happen but I would rather they remade ME3 instead of focusing on ME4

IMO, Mass Effect is the best game series ever. I love the MEU. Mass Effect 3 is the best game I ever played. And unlike many people, I loved the ending! It might not be perfect, but its close to it for me. Anything ME related is interesting to me and I honestly can't wait for ME:Next.

Ok OP let me make this real simple for you.  When bioware crafted the original trilogy they crafted an entire universe with it's own lore and backstory.  They included a history of a galactic civilization comprised of dozens of alien civilizations each with their own history and culture.  The original trilogy with all of it's content just barely scratched the surface of what Mass Effect can become.  The reaper arc might have driven the plot of the original trilogy but it isn't what made mass effect.  What makes Mass Effect is the universe itself.  And like with all Sci Fi universes Mass Effect has room to grow with new locations, new civilizations, new characters etc...  This next ME game will be an exciting time for the ME universe not only because they are starting with a new story and new protagonist (which gives them more creative freedom) but it is a chance to really evolve the franchise both in terms of in Universe (post reaper war galaxy has all kinds of possibilities) and also in terms of what direction they want to take Mass Effect in as a game (new hardware, new gameplay engine etc..)

There was no reason to do a Star Trek: The Next Generation or Deep Space nine....but they did it any way and were successful. Same logic applies here.

Unfortunately I am too attached to captain Picard and Data to care about any Trek series other than TNG. I'm sure Voyager and whatever else there is got good stories but they would be so much better for me if the TNG crew was in them. And I fear the same principle may apply to ME4. But like I said I will conclude so if it actually turns out to be that way and not before...

Keeping the ME series focused on just Shepard will eventually make him/her and the series stale as it'll just be having Shepard as the PC for the sake of it rather than for story reason's which is something that should be avoided. Introducing a new PC and characters with no relation to any of the cast from the main trilogy keeps the franchise fresh and interesting.

I don't follow the logic. If Mass Effect is about Shepard and stuff and that's why ME'4' doesn't make sense than the fact one liked or didn't like ME3 shouldn't change their view on the subject, right?

Anyway, the ideas of Mass Effect and its universe are rich. Shepard story is indeed over, and shouldn't be touched anymore. But there is plenty of room for more stories.

This is very disappointing to see. The idea that we can never have a returning protagonist whose story eventually ends, but whose universe continues to delight and fascinate. That's what I am sure BW is now considering: make any future ME games like the DA series with a new protagonist in each. That is not what I would want to see. The Inquisitor has no connection to Morrigan, Leliana, or Varric the way Shepard had to Garrus or Tali by ME3. All of that "no Shepard without Viccarian" stuff would be gone if we had to have a new protagonist in every single game.

OTOH, I see no problem with telling the story of Hawke/Shepard over the course of a few games and then moving on. It is the ME universe that makes it ME, not Shepard.

Finally, I am completely baffled as to why some one who is no longer interested in the franchise spends any of their time posting about it. Is this some kind of psychology experiment? I would think by now you would have found some other game to get involved with.

Mass effect is not shepard effect bioware told his story and the reapers there are many more to tell now its the new N7 guy turn. Shep is one of my favourite characters but it would get boring if it was just shep and his crew all the time. its time to move on to new people.

If you think mass effect is shep effect them do not buy me4 but you wil.

Mass Effect is certainly not about Shepard only. But what I'm getting from the little info we have on NME doesn't please me. At all. It's like they're trying to pull off a completely new and alien narrative on the MEU. But let's just wait and see.

I'm not excited about ME4, but I'm not hating it, either.  I am in a wait-and-see mode.  I'll let the suckers..err...early buyers, get their hands on it and report on the game for a couple of months before making a decision.  It's harder to avoid spoilers that way, but I'm pretty much over Bioware.  DAI killed all my interest in the DA universe, so we'll see if the ME team can revive my interest in the ME franchise, or pull a DAI and turn me off Bioware completely until they swap out all their teams and team leaders and writers, etc.
