Because it would be a waste of the exciting and interesting universe they have created.

Unfortunately I am too attached to captain Picard and Data to care about any Trek series other than TNG. I'm sure Voyager and whatever else there is got good stories but they would be so much better for me if the TNG crew was in them. And I fear the same principle may apply to ME4. But like I said I will conclude so if it actually turns out to be that way and not before...

Only problem with this analogy is that using your argument we'd never have had TNG, as why bother when we'd already had TOS? What mad man would try replacing Kirk, Spock and Bones...? Know what though, they did, and it worked. Worked with DS9 as well.

Shepard has been the backbone of the ME series....so far. I'm a huge fan of the character, the rest if his/her squad and most of his/her story, but ME at this point is so much more.

If it helps, I used to feel that way as well. A couple of years without any new ME though has made me re-evaluate my stance. I WANT more ME, whether it has Shepard or not is far less important now.

Exactly this - I grew up watching TOS, and at the time could not imagine watching anything Star Trek without that cast. But I loved TNG ... as long as the writing is good, the story and characters are engaging, and they stay faithful to the lore, then it will be worthy of the ME title.

But which universe?  It keeps changing with each game.

Which version of Cerberus?

Which version of the geth?  (heck will the geth even be around?)

Red ending, Green ending?  Blue Ending?

Tough-talking bad@ss marine with controversial opinions?  Or soft-spoken, hard-drinking officer in thigh-highs?

Mako or Hammerhead?

Our protagonist or Mac's?

What is the "Mass Effect universe" and what will it be next time?  What can we trust it to be next time?

it's more than just the sum of it's parts.  I loved all 3 and I'm excited to see what a post ME Shepard looks like.

I'm excited for a new start, and hopefully I can play as someone that isn't human, but that's probably not the case. As we heard new characters ,new story. Sick of that shepard already, but yeah, it's not really a mass effect without shepard. I guess they don't want to rename because the series has earned itself quite a name, they want to sell, sell ,sell!!!!!

Because I liked the first 3 and I expect I'll probably also like the next one.

Because, despite the lackluster ending to ME3, I enjoyed the entire trilogy.  I still enjoy it, years after ME3 came out.  There's still so much left for us to see.  The MEU has so much potential left untapped, and now that the threat of the Reapers is (hopefull) over and done with, we can explore new avenues and new storylines.

I'm a little hesitant about what Bioware is trying to do--making the next game more open-world--but I'm withholding my judgments and staying hopeful.  Maybe it'll work out.  On the other hand, I whole-heartedly approve of having a new protagonist.  I liked my Shepard, but their story is finished now, and it's time to move on.  Trying to extend their story any more would feel too much like milking the ME trilogy cash cow for all it's worth, or perhaps beating a dead horse with a stick...to me, at least.

Umm, Post ME3 Shepard looks like a pile of dust in most cases... ;)

But at any rate, Mass Effect as a franchise has been wildly inconsistent.  As my examples showed.  Which goes to my point of questioning why people want ME4.  What do they want exactly?  Mass Effect is hardly a consistent setting.  What is there to look forward to?

Gameplay and story in a setting we love, not constrained by slavish adherence to what's come before, but inspired by it to try new directions.

Well, Cerberus certainly proved Bioware doesn't feel constrained by what's come before

I really enjoyed the world which they created. I liked learning about the different speices and cultures and how that is all integrated (or not in some instances) together. Shepherd was just one of many stories in the universe, and I could see them wanting to do more in it. If they hadn't ended the series like they did, I might not be as wary as I am about the next game in the series.

Hey, I'll be happy if they take a new direction that can be defined as "run away from ME3 as fast as they can"

But i'm not going to say I'm looking forward to a new Mass Effect game just "because Mass Effect"  The franchise simply doesn't have enough of an identity for me to get excited over the name.

Which is fine, since we're simply answering the question you presented.

But part of your answer was "gameplay and story in a setting we love"  To which I pointed out the setting is unstable and varies dramatically from chapter to chapter.

The details shift a bit yes...but that doesn't take away from people's enjoyment of them. Gameplay wise the series really only improved with each iteration as far as I am concerned.

It's really not that hard to understand. People enjoyed Star Trek TNG and Deep Space 9 despite the two series having very different directions, the same holds true here.

I honestly hope I am not a soldier in the next ME game. I have nothing against space Marines but....exploration....moving forward out of a desire to see what's out there also appeals to me.

On the other hand, if George Lucas (assuming Disney had not bought him out) had announced he was making an Episode 7, there would be a lot of skeptical fans who may decide to stay home on opening night. If the first trailer of ME4 has a bunch of people walking around with green, glowy bits, I think there might be a sizable portion of the fan base who would not be thrilled about purchasing the game

Having the IP is important, not irritating the fanbase is equally so ...

Not all fans have the same opinion....but that was never in question. There will be people who want to see a new spin on a familiar series just as there are people who will never accept anything but the original.

I'm so over Shepard it's beyond where I ever dreamed I'd be. I still love the Mass Effect Universe. As far as I'm concerned they could declare Shepard dead. I don't care about Shepard. Shepard was ruined by bad writing in the end. I've moved on. I've let go. But I still love the MEU. As far as I'm concerned I think any ending but synthesis would really work for a sequel. They'd have a hard time explaining synthesis. Just send the reapers out into dark space in the Control ending after they fix everything, and make no mention of exactly what happened at the end of the war at all. If the reapers sit in dark space for another 50,000 years they're totally irrelevant for the story. Shepardlyst can reap in 50,000 years if (s)he wants, and no one will care because we'll all be dead or have technology that surpasses the reapers. Who cares?

Just write a story and make it a good one.

IMO, Mass Effect is the best game series ever. I love the MEU. Mass Effect 3 is the best game I ever played. And unlike many people, I loved the ending! It might not be perfect, but its close to it for me. Anything ME related is interesting to me and I honestly can't wait for ME:Next.
