Obsidian Entertainment.

They're releasing an old-school RPG called Pillars of
Eternity next month.

Fingers crossed that it itches my scratch.  Out of the ashes of Bioware a Phoenix rises and all that.

I will be giving it some close interest, thank you for the tip.

It's a YMMV but Obsidian was always on par or superior to Bioware - they just never found the same stable commercial success.

Obsidian was better at gameplay, at least. Granted, they were riding established systems (D&D, SPECIAL, etc) for most of their work. Bioware post-NWN/KOTOR has just tossed together whatever seems to catch their eye at the moment.

I don't know if I'd say gameplay rather than scripting (I'm thinking of PS:T and AP here) but in any event Obsidian IMO shouldn't be considered as less than Bioware's equal.

Let's not forget Alpha Protocol, here. I hesitate to bring up South Park because I'm fairly certain the flaws with the gameplay there aren't their fault.

Obsidian was always better. Pillars of Eternity is perfect. Even the early versions are already perfect. Character creation is already worthy of anything they charge.

But, as much as I prefer Obsidian games bioware have the upper hand when it comes to characters. That is why I still play their games.

Nothing new. This has always been the case in point that people will find reviews that justify their position. The only opinion that matters to me is my own. If I like the description of a game I will pick it up. I will play the game. If I do not like the game I stop playing it. it goes on the self of never to be played again or given away.

If a person ask my opinion of a game I have played I will give it with the caveat that YMMV.

I like DAi. I make no apology for it. No amount of other posters saying I am wrong will change that point. I paid my money for the game. I am entitled to my opinion. That opinion is as valid as anyone's opinion.

Other posters have a right to their opinion to like or dislike the game.

The problem I have with some posters is they try to post their opinion as fact. I state upfront it is my opinion and always say but YMMV.

Yeah and after looking at the Beta from Gamescom in stead of the boring fetch quest that you get with DA:I you have awesome quests where you go and rescue a pig from an Ogre.

(to frankf43) In fairness, it is usually the execution of the quest that matters.

Rescuing a pig from an ogre sounds great.

Though if said rescued pig then asks me to find ten supply caches for it, I'll be pissed.

The other one I just saw was go out and collect spring berries.

You are overestimating the number of fetch quests in the area (and game I would assume) and also diluting their potential for RP.

The other one I just saw was go out and collect spring berries.

The spring berries thing is not a quest, it's part of it, but it's not a quest (the quest in this case being the friggin main quest). It's in the beggining of the game, and it's to make the main character leave the camp because when you return it gets attacked.

Also, the ogre quest has an entire dungeon crawling segment, and can be resolved peacefully. There's also one quest in the beta that's going to take a sort of wyvern egg from X place, and present you a rival party that search for it, with a combat segment that is affected by your dialog choices (in my case, I managed to make 2 of the 5 enemy guys leave. Don't know if it's possible to avoid this particular combat), and the egg is in a high spot, which to recover it without breaking it you need several attribute and skill checks (or a rope).

So yeah, exactly like Inquisition...

Let's not insult Obsidian by comparing their quest design to Bioware. As they have shown reportedly they are the industry leader (if unappreciated) in this area.

Bioware has always designed ass quests. For some people the quests worked better when they either had main plot importance or lots of dialogue. But that never changed the fundamental design flaw.

I was complementing Obsidian quest design, and saying that even the fetch quests presented in the beta have some interesting stuff in it (and I wanted to put context on the straw berries thing)

Best PC RPG's according to RPG Codex, they can't decide on no. 9 though :P

1) Fallout

2) Planescape Torment

3) Fallout 2

4) Baldur's Gate II

5) Arcanum

6) Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines

7) Baldur's Gate

8) Icewind Dale

9) Fallout: New Vegas / Temple of Elemental Evil / TES: Morrowind

10) Deus Ex

Seems like it has lots of potential. I wouldn't be satisfied if I don't have the opportunity to betray the pig and ally with the ogre.

If we have enough money why can't we just buy the farmer a new pig? I mean if an Ogre is going  to steal a pig you'd expect him/her to eat the thing not carry it half way across a map and down into a dungeon while it is still a live. Surely the farmer would be happy with a new pig?

Forget the farmer and the ogre.

Take the pig for yourself and turn it into bacon.

What if it's a sheep pig and it was trained to herd sheep? What then, smart guy?

The problem is not the pig itself, is the ogre killing pigs. He tells you to go kill the ogre, not rescue his pigs.

I like both 'em lists and can agree quite a bit. All of those surely fit my top20 or so not naming specific places, but also DA:I is up there. So, just saying it is possible to agree on many things yet not all.
