I couldn't find any thread that's dedicated to everyone's favorite lyrium addicted Templar Samson! (Or was it Caroll? May he rest in peace.) Anyway I found it pretty sad to see Samson go on the deep end. In DA2 he was reduced to begging on the streets and smuggling apostates for coin, just so he can get his fix next on lyrium. No doubt representing the control the Chantry exerts on its Templars. Cullen's backstory on him showed Samson to be a decent man once, following the Templar ideal. What really surprised me about Samson, was his relationship with the tranquil mage: Maddox. The reason why Samson was kicked out of the order was because he was caught smuggling Maddox's letters to his lover. You would've thought that Samson would resent him, but instead Samson managed to rescue Maddox from Kirkwall and protected him! Maddox was even loyal enough that he committed suicide rather than be captured by the Inquisitor and this affected Samson if finds out about the news.

 

Overall I rather find Samson interesting enough to warrant his own thread. What do you guys think of him?

I tend to think that it is growing out of him, that would be real fitting. But in that case,  why is it growing only there, and not across his whole body? So I am not sure...

 

It's part of his armour.

If you sentence him to imprisonment and go to talk to him, he's in regular prisoner's clothes, so it's easier to tell.

Making those small lyrium shards on his gauntlets is killing me (appropriately enough... ) But once I've fixed the shoulders and worked on the face some more, I think I'm nearly there.

That's next after I put on some primer (and clean my gunked-up palette). I wanted to show folks the base sculpt before the colour goes on.

For those interested, here's the current state of the paint job on the Samson sculpt. Lots of weathering and details to do on the armour, and the face doesn't have much more than a base coat, but coming along.

FYI: I'm just about finished with painting the Samson sculpt. A few bits and cleanup to do, but here's where I'm at before I start varnishing it. This has been fun!

How many sculptures have you done, and do you have some favorites (besides all of them)?

 

This is the third sculpture I've made. The first was a bust of my companion Nadia Grell from SWTOR, which sits on my desk. The second was a kodama for a friend.

 

And I kinda want to do Calpernia next. I'm taking a little break first, though.

@Jo, fabulous!  The detail in the piece is fantastic!

I am! I'm currently building the armature for her (aluminium wire, foil, and masking tape).

 

The hardest part has been finding references for her pose. I know what I want to do, but finding just the right images has been tricky. I think I've got what I need now, and I'm sketching up the rest.

 

Plus I had to think of a good reason to have her sitting down so she's a companion piece to the Samson sculpt, but Callie's not a sitter: I imagine her as the pacing sort, with lots of fervent energy. Still, I like the idea I have and I'm excited with where this could go.

Fun fact about The World of Thedas vol 2: those sections for Samson and Calpernia were written by Sylvia Feketekuty (I was writing other stuff). I got a kick out of the fact that the only person seen using Samson's first name is Meredith.

Hi there! Thanks for all the kind words and thoughts you shared here. I never expected Samson and Calpernia to get this kind of love and it's been really amazing. That support helped me especially last year, when I had family illness to cope with: all's well now, but the enthusiasm of our fans was a boost at a time when I really needed one.
