@ModernAcademic, I don't consume much fanfiction. I've definitely noticed
1) A surge of Samson fanfic on my tumblr dash [this is what spurred my question tbh]
2) The trend in the Solas fanfic fandom to have Lavellan find solace in Abelas after Solas leaves
but not what you mentioned.
A+ analysis you've written there (I read it all), very interesting.
@Everyone thanks for sharing with me Samson's appeal, there was a lot of insight and it makes sense. I am now going to pay very close attention to Samson's arc in my current playthrough
You're right. More and more people have been commenting on Samson lately. It's possible to find a lot more artwork of him on Tumblr. Maybe more players are beginning to find the appeal of his character by now?
He's no hero, nor anti hero either, much less he's in the same category as Cassandra, Leliana and other canon characters. My guess would be that, as people have thoroughly explored all possible fantasies they could nourish with the main chars (fanfic, artwork, fan videos, etc), their interests later began to veer toward the secondary ones.
Besides, Samson is considered an antagonist. There's a whole mystique surrounding villainous characters and trying to seduce or be seduced by them. The abundant fanfic and literature involving dark, shady characters - even though in my belief, Samson is nowhere near to being neither of those, just a man of simple tastes looking for a way to recover the scattered pieces of his life and dignity - is proof of that fascination we all share once in a while. ![]()

I think Gideon Emery totally sells this scene. It's all manner of awesome. (apologies for the different sizes.)

Lots of new DA confessions concerning Samson. Here's one of them (found on Tumblr):

It's interesting how readily people dismiss characters and their development in Dragon Age. I've seen this a number of times with different characters even the main companions. It's taken me a third playthrough to get to where I can understand and sympathise with Vivienne, and I knew that would be the case, so I wasn't willing to dismiss her because of my first inquisitors reactions.

I really like these 3 pieces. All that red (the colour brings a sense of omnipresent doom) and his placid eyes displaying apathy show a feeling that Samson possesses - or that rather has possessed him - that I've been trying to convey in NoRS. A feeling that no one in Skyhold could detect.
Cullen and other chars readily dismiss him as weak, as a junkie, saying he never had the strength to stand up to Corypheus and fight. On a deeper layer, what they meant was that Samson didn't have the courage to stand up to what was wrong and never tried to fight back.
You were always weak, and your leadership proves it.
Cmdr Cullen
This is a lie that only becomes evident after the player realizes that fighting back is all he did in DA2. And for as much as he fought, what good did it do him? In the end, he loses all the same. He's forever condemned to be a drug addict and a homeless beggar people want to have nothing to do with. Forever comdemned to beg.
Both defeats - against addiction and unemployment (borne of social rejection) - led him to an internal surrender. He gave up the struggle for survival, for one day regaining his dignity as a man. He succumbed to depression.
But of course, that's my personal interpretation of the artwork. We each see what we want. That's the beauty of art. ![]()

Hey guys, I have a question for you.
Flemeth says something to each one of HAwke's companions in DA2, remember?
In your opinion, what would she have told Samson if they ever met?

There are some people on Tumblr calling Samson an old man. I think he's supposed to be in his fourties, right?
My mother is on her fifities, now and she looks as though she were 30.
Unless the estimated life span in Thedas is around 60 years, Samson is still an adult. There's a long path to be walked until he can be called old. ![]()

I think she would question him on his loyalty on the Chantry and will foreshadow on that he will sacrifice EVERYTHING for revenge on them.

dumblr.
The ageism on that site is pretty astounding at times. I too can generalise, but that's beneath me.

Yeah I mean the years have been hard on him, no lie, but "old man"? Not in any serious sense. ****, Loghain must be, what, in his sixties by the time of Inquisition? And that man still looks like he could get it. Samson's an older man relative to a lot of the fans, he's not old.

That's hilarious. I'm almost 30 and yea...40 is not all that old. I think relatively - for most fans - he's OLD. I guess. I dunno. Most of the people in Inquisition are near 40 or older than 40. So I think it's more they also think he's physically unattractive and old. So therefore gross and not worthy of consideration.

He's in his late 40's, for sure. It's all relative. His age isn't old to me, but I might be closer to his age than his fans on Tumblr?
I imagine he feels old certain days when he's not moving as fast as he remembers moving at 20 (or as fast as he thought he moved, nostalgia and all), or that there didn't used to be as many pops and clicks when first gets moving in the morning, or seeing fresh-faced young people around Skyhold all full of idealism and youthful energy. I imagine some days he does feel old.
He can still get it, though.

Really? I thought Samson was in a constant state of high energy and super-strength, infused with unnatural power and vitality by his armor and red lyrium.

I wonder if someone in the Merchant's Guild will rename their coffe brand to Red Lyrium so as to increase sales.

I should have been more clear about that thought process coming from him sitting around Skyhold/end-game.
While he's running the Red Templars? Yeah I don't doubt he feels better than he has in decades.

Besides, Samson is considered an antagonist.
You consider his antagonism to be a matter of opinion? I know villainy is subjective, but the title of antagonist is just a term for someone in opposition to the protagonist. Samson fits that mold in the story.

Who condemned him? He was fired, not blacklisted from the job market, and we saw Ferelden mine workers slugging through even though there was enough prejudice toward Fereldens in Kirkwall to limit their job opportunities.
He did a little illegal work, so that's one in his favor. Sometimes it meant he inadvertently sold children into slavery, but points for effort.
