I still don't understand how Raleigh never got a job after his expulsion from the Templar Order. ![]()
Sure, he had to cope with his addiction. And many addicts never stay in one job for too long. But, I don't know. Maybe he could've worked as a henchman for smugglers? He was in the military, after all, much like samurais who became ronins after Japan faced an economic crisis.

I thought perhaps templars who got expelled from the order were no longer called by their first name, but Barris is. =S
Speaking of names, I wonder what Calpernia's last name is...maybe Jo Berry will reveal it in her short story? *___*
And what about Corypheus? Wasn't this his "nickname" within the group of Magisters who went to the Black City?
That's not his real name, right? We never actually learn how he was called....
Unlikely, Calpernia is not her real name.

As he's dealing with an on-going addiction and suffering from debilitating withdrawal symptoms - it becomes difficult to keep down a job. His world is centered around getting dust. Everything he does in a day contributes to getting dust somehow, someway. Having to be somewhere at a specific time, and function in a specific way is difficult for addicts not in recovery. He could blow all of his coin on dust if he ends up begging or earning a large enough amount of coin - and he could lose a few days binging, missing work, and losing contracts if he ever did merc work.
I sort of imagine he works the docks as day labor when times get really tough, which is about as much of a commitment as he can handle some days (showing up looking for work, looking for work somewhere else when nothing's available or he showed up too late). Working the docks also gets him contacts for ships he can smuggle mage kids out on.
Working the docks is also where he could meet Carta - which is how a few of us imagine he gets most of his work from.
They keep him in lyrium and they've got a human who knows Kirkwall well, can get places they can't, and can fight. Having a pocket Templar as an enforcer to collect debts or guard a shipment is probably pretty handy. Carta probably has a few ex-Templars in their pockets in all the major cities with Circles (the ones smart enough to not try anything stupid with the lyrium shipments).

I wish I could give 10 more likes to this explanation.
This is quite comprehensive. It has nailed the reality of an addict pretty well.
Poor Samson must have lost track of time, having to cope with the lack of a stable routine and his ever present compulsion for lyrium.
I wonder if the Carta would've had a nickname for him? Like a gangsta name? ![]()

I feel like I need to go back and apologize to DA2 Samson. Both of my Hawkes were kind of jerks to him.
Also, knowing what we know now about lyrium addiction and the templar order, picking the templar specialization for any PC takes on a much darker edge. I guess I could always headcanon that my purple ManHawke pulled an Alistair and stopped taking it after things went FUBAR. And he's all grumpy and not himself in DA:I because of the withdrawal.

I wish we could've given him a job. He does ask Hawke for help in Act 2. ![]()
And Hawke does help lost people, like he did to Orana.

I honestly can't remember if my Hawkes helped him or not. Or is that just ambient? I know you can reinstate him into the templars, which only one of my Hawkes did. He figured the Gallows was full of loonies already, so a guy who actually had his heart in the right place couldn't possibly make things WORSE.
Then it got worse ![]()

I'd say it was ambient, mostly because I can't remember either. I think my mage Hawke Caleb, was possibly a lot tougher with him, but not sure. I might have to go back and replay some bits to remind me.

I re-played it pretty recently and I want to say there's an option to ask Samson if he wants any help, or work... or something like that... and he turns you down?

Question for you all, when does Samson start taking red lyrium - is it after the final battle in Kirkwall - or before, possibly after he rejoins the templars?
I am seriously thinking I need to source this in order to finish this last chapter of my fic.
Re: that artbyg piece - wouldn't it be grand if the red templars could be saved by undertaking the joining? (As long as they're not too far gone of course. Poor Wingman Pete, I feel for him.)
I don't think they have a redemption arc planned for Samson though ![]()

Well, in Paper & Steel, Samson meets the Warden/Corypheus after Cullen left Kirkwall and he was supposedly one of the few people summoned to help the Templar Order restore some semblance of order.
I suppose he had already rejoined when he took his fist vial of red, Bugsie. But only after the final battle.

What bugs me is how he saw what the red lyrium did to Meredith and took it anyway.
I guess his anger at the Chantry and all it meant was so great it blinded him to the consequences of his choice.
He could've chosen to move on and try rebuilding his future in another city. Instead, he let his personal frustrations win over good sense and allowed them to drag him to this abyss.

I liked Samson in DA2 and helped him becoming a Templar again. But I must say in DAI I had mixed feelings - it was nice to see him again but the same time very sad what had become of him. And I couldn't really get into what really happened and why.
But only due to reading your thread and some of the fanfiction I found I am now really attached to him and on my current templar playthrough missing him. I guess that means for the future only mage playthroughs for me. So, umh, thanks ![]()
And no, there is no Samson bashing in the Cullen thread - I am a Cullenite myself so no problem there ![]()

He's pretty great. And by pretty great - a crippingly heart-breaking character that I emo out about maybe 2x a day(i'm exaggerating...a bit). In all seriousness, I've derived a great amount of enjoyment of delving into his character. I am much more sympathetic to the templars -- and find that the Chantry has done the mages AND the templars a significant disservice a fact that I really didn't pay attention to until this game. Frankly I think it needs to be disabanded or completely overhauled. Hardened-Leliana will be Divine in probably all my canon PT's - so my Lavellan/Solas and Trev/Nobody(because only Samson is worthy of her).
For fanfics - might I peddle my dearest friend's work - Meer(on here) - http://archiveofouro...y/pseuds/meerly
(If you haven't read it.) it's pretty sweet and wonderful. Also must check out Bugsie's stuff, Tigrae, and Arcanista's Samson fics. They are all pretty much, must reads.
And then click on Vhenan Trash in my signature and read Sable's stuff on there. She wrote some really sad and sweet non-romantic Samson stuff.

Same. I was super pro-mage in DA:O because my first Warden was Amell. And that spilled over into DA2 until Act 3 where I saw the extent of the crazy among templars and mages. Asunder and DA:I really did a good job of making both sides sympathetic, and providing the first really comprehensive and sympathetic look at what it's like for the templars. So now I just generally feel bad for everyone ![]()

Sinking with the same ship since DA2. Because of this, I have always 2 canon characters simultaneously, so I can care for both factions ![]()
