I like it so far.
Their adults when they take vows and they know what it will be to be Templar, you can walk or not by that point.
Bs. No one is prepared with dealing with the addiction to the drugs, the bitter faces of mages who you vow to protect, the people who you work with who do horrible things on the down low and being in a thank less job. It's like saying a person is ready to be a soldier because they were technically an adult when they signed up.
@above: The line by Alistair in Origins has since been retconned. Templars need lyrium to use their powers, not just to make them stronger, but to use them at all.
Dude....DAI just prove that Alistair in dao was right about templer not needing lyrium.

How? I think the game is pretty clear that templars still need lyrium. If it wasn't, explain why Alistair takes lyrium to use his abilities in the comics?
They can walk away; that has been made clear repeatedly on the subject.
Would the Chantry be irked? Maybe, but would they allow it? Yes.
First of all. Who would walk away with that lyrium addiction?

*Points to Cassandra.
Every templar is a cheaper, mass produce version of the seekers. Yes that right. Every seeker proves that lyrium in not need and that should make every Templer angry as hell about it. The only reason the lyrium is used is because it faster and more efficient to make anti magic soldiers that way. Remember Cassandra tells you that the seeker took actions of expedience over fair courses. The templer order as it is is one of them.

The seekers kept many things a secret from both the chantry, the circles, the templars and their own seekers for that matter. Remember the chantry didn't know how the seekers rite works, they also didn't know that the rite of tranquility was reversible which is why Divine Justinia ordered research into the matter over the objections of the lord seeker who already knew how it could be reversed.
The Chantry used Lyrium because that was the only way they knew how to give Templars their abilities which I suspect was planned by the previous lord seekers as the seekers could use the lyrium in the blood of the Templars against them.

Let make one thing clear. The chantry let the seekers keep secrets. Just because it resulted like that does not mean it started out like that. For many year the Divine who was suppose to be the leader of the chantry was nothing but a figure head and everyone with in it went around and did as they pleased. It not the the chantry did not know, it's that the chantry did not bother to regulate itself. And guess what happened.... a HUGE BLOODY WAR.
That's overly harsh and unfair the divines had to try to run a vast multinational religious organization and keep a eye on the seekers with medieval technology, its vastly harder than it sounds or you give credit for even with the knight divines and Knight Enchanters to aid them, both of which mind you are vulnerable to seeker abilities. Its amazing the system managed to work for so long even setting asides any possible corruption in the chantry.

It not that he divine has no tools to do it. What of the left and right hands of the divine. It matter not if it's medieval tech. If Leliana, the current left hand, can find near every detail about pc then why can't the past ones keep an eye on what the seekers are doing? Also, I'm blaming the entire chantry for this, not just eh divine. I can't blame someone who becomes to old to do anything of action but I can blame the organization for not regulating itself.
By tradition the right hand of the divine is always a Templar, Cassandra was a exception to that rule.
As for keeping a eye on the seekers its a organization that runs off paranoia that's trained to suspect everyone and whose members tend to travel around in small groups if not in pairs. Leiana had a hard enough time trying to finding the seekers for Cassandra and they were all going to the same place in the same country, How would you suppose the left hands of the divine to do so when they are moving around everywhere?

Dude, seekers are super templers. Cassandra is not an exception. The difference is source of power and additional abilities. And Cassadra is the right hand, I'm referring to the left. Added, both hands act in the divines stead and authority. And the issue Leliana had with finding the seekers was because most of them were dead. And even then that did not stop her from find the head seeker. Point is that it was allowed to get to that point.
This is the flaws of the too big organizations, like the Chantry. After a certain size, it become so large and complicated to run that it is nearly impossible to maintain a strict order without any secret and fault.
With lyrium, the Chantry had an easy way to have an obedient army like the templars. But they could not control the seekers in this way, and to the top of this, the seekers were given too much authority. Dangeous combination

And they were never watched. But the lyrium...I don't know what their intentions were with that....Was it a case they really used it for control or that they knew about the ill effect but used it anyway out of ease or was it both? All that is still horrible.

I think the side effects of lyrium revealed itself quite early. So the fact that they went on with it without a second thought to find an alternative way that does not destruct people's body and mind.......maybe Chantry people interpreted it as a price the templars have to pay for the greater good (and I hope they thought the same in the beginning). But the benefits of 2in1 (abilities to negate magic and control the templars at the same time)? I doubt Chantry would have thrown away such a possibility, no matter the intentions. After all, the Chantry has a significant political and - through templars' lyrium addiction - military power.
But it is possible that I see a very dark picture and the Chantry is the knight in shining armour to save mankind from the mages and demons.

Found this piccy and thought it was nice. He's looking broody and grim, but hey its a badass drawing. Drawn by ultra-trashcannon...I think.
Just found a picture of him among my screenshots
And a bonus: one of his buddies:

Perhaps this was the original intention but after that imo it either boils down to being willfully blind or the notion that this is the order of things as it should be (with a little sprinkle of "it's the only way")

Do you have a tumblr I can reblog this from, because this picture is great. If not, may I post it with credit to you? If not, that's okay, of course. But it's a great pic. ![]()

He's an amazingly detailed looking character, but there are are so few closeups of him. Some very nice fan art though.
